Fracking Gets a Clean Bill of Health

Fracking Gets a Clean Bill of Health | Via Meadia.

The British government’s health agency is the latest body to give fracking a clean bill of health, in a move that should galvanize the country to act on its considerable reserves of shale gas.

Alas, “enlightened” Boulderites get a free pass

Don’t expect this to sway recalcitrant greens; one activist pointed out that “low risk is not the same as no risk,” which while semantically true, doesn’t belong in an energy policy discussion. Every energy source entails risks, from wind (bird deaths, anyone?) to coal, from solar (bird blindness) to, yes, shale gas. The goal, then, shouldn’t be to eliminate risk, but rather to minimize it. This new review suggests that that’s possible with shale gas.

Energy prices are the topic du jour for British politicians right now, as parties compete over who can further distance themselves from the green policies that have been pushing electricity prices higher and higher. The UK is sitting on an estimated 1.3 quadrillion cubic feet of shale gas. Drilling can be done safely, and can boost the country’s energy security.

Boulderites, coming to a city near your, courtesy of your enlightened politicians and your silly guilty consciences. I recommend getting out and voting to put a stop to municipalization. Not living in the city, I’m not sure which way the vote is. I could look it up but there’s an internet add on everytime you load a web page.

The week the Obamcare O-ring Froze

Charles Krauthammer: Obamacare laid bare – The Washington Post.

Every disaster has its moment of clarity. Physicist Richard Feynman dunks an O-ring into ice water and everyone understands instantly why the shuttle Challenger exploded. This week, the Obamacare O-ring froze for all the world to see: Hundreds of thousands of cancellation letters went out to people who had been assured a dozen times by the president that “If you like your health-care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health-care plan. Period.”

Period. It’s the elite inside the castle walls preaching to their minions. It’s time to ask yourself if you’re a minion. Perhaps if you’re part of the MSM that decided not to inform the public you qualify.

Back to Charles…

The cancellations lay bare three pillars of Obamacare: (a) mendacity, (b) paternalism and (c) subterfuge.

a) Those letters are irrefutable evidence that President Obama’s repeated you-keep-your-coverage claim was false. Why were they sent out? Because Obamacare renders illegal (with exceedingly narrow “grandfathered” exceptions) the continuation of any insurance plan deemed by Washington regulators not to meet their arbitrary standards for adequacy. Example: No maternity care? You are terminated.

So a law designed to cover the uninsured is now throwing far more people off their insurance than it can possibly be signing up on the nonfunctioning insurance exchanges. Indeed, most of the 19 million people with individual insurance will have to find new and likely more expensive coverage. And that doesn’t even include the additional millions who are sure to lose their employer-provided coverage. That’s a lot of people. That’s a pretty big lie.

But perhaps Obama didn’t know.

….

Charles covers b & c with equal TTTTT for the strikeout but the conclusion sums it up…

Obamacare is the largest transfer of wealth in recent American history. But you can’t say that openly lest you lose elections. So you do it by subterfuge: hidden taxes, penalties, mandates and coverage requirements that yield a surplus of overpayments.

So that your president can promise to cover 30 million uninsured without costing the government a dime. Which from the beginning was the biggest falsehood of them all. And yet the free lunch is the essence of modern liberalism. Free mammograms, free preventative care, free contraceptives for Sandra Fluke. Come and get it.

And then when you find your policy canceled, your premium raised and your deductible outrageously increased, you’ve learned the real meaning of “free” in the liberal lexicon: something paid for by your neighbor — best, by subterfuge.

Botched ObamaCare website is ‘just the beginning’

Hayes: Botched ObamaCare website is ‘just the beginning’ | Fox News.

Let’s see, we have the following issues assuming the website is fixed:

  1. Rate shock
  2. Network shock (you can keep your doctor/hospital)
  3. Subsidy Cliff
  4. Family glitch

Rate shock: The full effect is far from being felt.

Network shock: Is just beginning to be an issue

Subsidy cliff: Has been noticed in a few areas such as Colorado resort areas

Family glitch: It’s coming.

We haven’t even touched on the young invincibles refusing to take their medicine.

Obama-don’t-care

Don’t ask this president, because Obama-don’t-care.

Obama-don’t-care that his signature program uses deceptive advertising | WashingtonExaminer.com.

But the administration’s lies don’t end there. Obama had been claiming till as recently as last year that his law would force no one to give up coverage: “If you like your plan, you can keep it.”

But the administration’s internal communications show that it knew back in 2010 that 12 to 93 million policy holders might well lose their coverage.

That’s when Sebelius issued regulations grandfathering policies so long as they didn’t change. If insurers so much as inflation-adjusted premiums, they lost their protected status, becoming subject to Obamacare’s mandates requiring them to cover everything from maternity services for elderly couples to drug rehab for teetotalers.

I don’t believe this is true. My policy is grandfathered and I can tell you the premiums went up. A lot.

All of this prompted even the Washington Post’s “fact” checkers this week to give Obama “Four Pinocchios.”

The whole point of Obamacare — aka the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — was to protect patients from greedy insurers who lure them when they are healthy only to use some arcane fine print to jack prices or dump them when they fall sick.

But the administration has engaged in similar behavior, showing that the profit motive is not the only corrupter in human affairs. Partisanship, ideology and — above all — a president’s need to leave a legacy are even more so.

When companies put profits ahead of people, the government can go after them for fraud and falsehood. But what should people do when the government puts politics ahead of people?

Don’t ask this president, because Obama-don’t-care.

Just to remind you about keeping your plan…

Class warfare – Obamacare: Unfair to the young middle class, punished enough already

Class warfare –  Obamacare: Unfair to the young middle class, punished enough already – latimes.com.

What I mean by substandard is this. We’ve been hearing people complain that the Obamacare-approved policies cover too much, not too little. That’s part of the reason premiums are higher. But from my view, a higher monthly premium along with higher copays create a disincentive. Paying more to see a doctor means there’s less chance I’’ll use that service unless I’m absolutely desperate.

All of this isn’t simply idle hand-wringing. If young healthy people like myself feel we’re being taken advantage of, and opt out of purchasing insurance — paying the penalty instead — the healthcare exchanges will collapse. (The penalty in year one for opting out is only $95 or 1% of your salary, whichever is higher — far less than the cost of even the most basic insurance plan.)

When Obamacare comes fully online, it will do wonders to provide healthcare for people who were not eligible for Medicaid but still could not afford health insurance. If this system is going to be sustainable, however, we’re going to need to find a way to get older and wealthier Americans to chip in more. Because, right now, it’s young, middle-class people just outside the subsidy range who are biting the bullet. Young, middle-class people who already bore the highest toll in the recent financial collapse, who have seen our wages sliced and our job prospects dwindle.

You can only ride our backs for so long before we’re going to tell you enough is enough.

You go Mr. Fleischer. I will say this, old people have some of the same problems. The cheapest coverage I can get on the Colorado exchange is over 20% more than what I’m paying now for a higher maximum out of pocket. I don’t want all those bells and whistles either.

Although we’re years apart, we have more in common then you think.

“It was a necessary lie, and the useful idiots are still parroting it.”

says Instapundit, commenting on Meghan McArdle’s article: What Everyone Knew About Obamacare and Wouldn’t Say

Meghan concludes…

We forget that when millions of people hear the president say that “if you like your insurance, you can keep it” and “premiums will fall by $2,500 for the average family,” they don’t listen with a wry smile. They don’t write it off as understandable hyperbole from a president who is working to pass a great law with a few flaws. They don’t think this speech means “I care about getting the best insurance for as many people as possible.” They think it means “if you like your insurance, you can keep it” and “premiums will fall by $2,500 for the average family.” If they didn’t think it meant that, they might not have supported the law

Indeed. And if the MSM had done their job…

Backing up, Meghan start off talking about rate shock…

We don’t actually know how bad a problem this is. Mathematically, two things must be true: There are some people in this country who are losing their current insurance and gaining better insurance at a lower cost, and there are some people in this country who are losing their current insurance and getting worse insurance at a higher cost. And there are some who are now getting insurance they couldn’t afford at all before.

We don’t know how many people are in each group. Nor do we know how big a problem rate shock will be for the folks who experience it. But that doesn’t matter for the news story, which, in the absence of data, will be a war of anecdotes. Not ideal, but frankly, most of the folks now complaining about the “rate shock” anecdata were often the same folks who eagerly showcased every anecdotal story about a poor single mom who was excited to be getting insurance for the first time. So I find it hard to take their distress too seriously.

The law’s supporters have made some quite reasonable points in response — that rate shock was an unfortunate but necessary consequence of broadening coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, and it may not even affect that many people. You can’t make even the nicest of omelets without breaking eggs. And some of them did mention this at least once during the run-up to the law’s passage.

And here’s one of my hot buttons…

They’ve also, however, made some arguments that were, at the very least, extremely ill-considered, such as saying that the insurance people had before wasn’t “real insurance” and implying that they are too stupid to know what’s good for them. As product marketers will tell you, when customers complain about a product change, here’s what not to do: Declare that your customers are idiots who don’t understand that they didn’t actually want the thing you took away from them. If you don’t believe me, just ask the folks on the New Coke team.

My plan from Assurant Health was purchased in 1999 so it IS a Grandfathered plan. I did not make any significant changes and was even able to add my wife so it’s still a Grandfathered plan. It has a $500 benefit for wellness per person per year. After that it’s fairly high deductible and I was rated up for some pre-existing conditions. The maximum out of pocket is $9700. The lowest cost plan on the Colorado marketplace is $300/mo higher and has a $12,700 maximum out of pocket.

Despite what I consider unreasonable rate hikes over the years, I would not trade my plan for an Exchange/Marketplace plan. I guess am a stupid idiot that doesn’t know what’s best for him and doesn’t realize he has an “inferior” plan. I would like to say that apparently the money paid out by Assurant Health is still green as Children’s Hospital has accepted the > $200,000 in payments that Assurant Health has sent them.

The Sgt. Schultz Media

The Sgt. Schultz Media | National Review Online.

Outrage spans the land as the mainstream media breathlessly report that administration officials knew for more than three years Obama’s ironclad promise, “If you like your health care plan, you can keep it. Period.” was howlingly false and millions would lose the coverage they liked. The bulletin is issued as if no one other than certain government officials knew that the president’s promise, regularly invoked in the run-up to the 2012 presidential election, was A Bright Shining Lie.

Nonsense.

Tens of thousands of us who had actually read the hideously titled Affordable Care Act — or significant portions thereof — because we had to organize our businesses around it, advise clients regarding compliance with it, or otherwise implement the monstrosity’s provisions, knew health-care coverage for millions was going to be adversely affected. Millions more simply understood that there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

But not the MSM. They were too busy being Obama’s obedient lapdog. Cancellation of plans should NOT be a surprise to anyone. The MSM should have been informing the public but they chose to remain ignorant. Inquiring minds want to know…

If you work in the MSM, can you be fired for dereliction of duty?

There’s also a bunch of talk about how the insurance companies could simply change their plans to be ACA compliant. While I’m sure there are a myriad of reasons why they have not, there is one that is very simple to understand. The act is called the Affordable Care Act. In general it’s only Affordable if you qualify for a subsidy.

THE ONLY PLACE YOU CAN GET YOUR SUBSIDY IS TO PURCHASE A PLAN THROUGH THE EXCHANGE / MARKETPLACE.

Imagine if the companies simply switched everyone over and started charging them the list price of the new and improved plans.

Believe me, there would be NO dereliction of duty by the MSM if that were to happen.

Massive Plan Cancellations: “We Knew”

Top Dem Admits: ‘We Knew’ | National Review Online.

House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer conceded to reporters today that Democrats knew people would not be able to keep their current health care plans under Obamacare and expressed qualified contrition for President Obama’s repeated vows to the contrary.

“We knew that there would be some policies that would not qualify and therefore people would be required to get more extensive coverage,” Hoyer said in response to a question from National Review.

Asked by another reporter how repeated statements by Obama to the contrary weren’t “misleading,” Hoyer said “I don’t think the message was wrong. I think the message was accurate. It was not precise enough…[it] should have been caveated with – ‘assuming you have a policy that in fact does do what the bill is designed to do.’”

Why didn’t the general publich know? Main Stream Media, LOOK IN THE MIRROR. YOU ARE WHY the general public was so poorly informed. Y O U. It was very widely known that only grandfathered plans issued prior to March 23rd, 2010 would be able to keep their plans. That fact alone should have lead some hard nosed MSM reporter to dig a little (or a lot) deeper. But you just soaked up the “You can keep your plan BS.”. Now you’re covered in it, and guess what, you deserve it. The problem is the uninformed masses are covered in it because you refused to do your job. They don’t deserve it.

Continuing…

Hoyer noted that people losing access to their current plans are mostly in the individual market, which is a small segment of the overall market. He also argued requiring those plans to follow new mandates and regulations was important for ensuring those plans included “adequate coverage so the public would not have to be on the hook for serious illnesses or other illnesses.”

What a bunch of hooey. Almost all major medical cover “serious illnesses” even the “bad plans”. This concept that all plans born prior to Obamacare are garbage is BS. Interestingly enough, the people requried to surrender their plans purchased them between March 23rd 2010 and today. The people who can keep their plans purchased them prior to March 23rd and made no modifications to them. Due to high turnover in the individual market, that number is very low (finding the best deal syndrome).

Fortunately, my plan is “grandfathered”. So being such an old plan, it must be “garbage”, at least that’s the implication every time you hear a Democrat speak on this issue. The checks this garbage plan issued to Children’s Hospital, totaling more than $200,000 and probably closer to $300,000 worked just fine.

I like my plan (yes I wish it was a lower deductible but I couldn’t afford that), I can keep my plan. I AM keeping my plan.

I must be some kind of neanderthal for wanting to keep an ancient plan that MUST be garbage simply from when it was issued. Oh and guess what, I WAS discriminated against with my plan and received rate ups for medical conditions (i.e. I didn’t get the “good driver” discount). EVEN WITH THAT, it is substantially cheaper than the least expensive Bronze plan available on the exchange which has a maximum out of pocket that is about $3000 higher than my current plan.

Doctors & Obamacare: “The solution is simple, just say “no” “

Docs resisting ObamaCare | New York Post.

New York doctors are treating ObamaCare like the plague, a new survey reveals.

A poll conducted by the New York State Medical Society finds that 44 percent of MDs said they are not participating in the nation’s new health-care plan.

Another 33 percent say they’re still not sure whether to become ObamaCare providers.

Only 23 percent of the 409 physicians queried said they’re taking patients who signed up through health exchanges.

“This is so poorly designed that a lot of doctors are afraid to participate,” said Dr. Sam Unterricht, president of the 29,000-member organization. “There’s a lot of resistance. Doctors don’t know what they’re going to get paid.”

Three out of four doctors who are participating in the program said they “had to participate” because of existing contractual obligations with an insurer or medical provider, not because they wanted to.

Only one in four “affirmatively” chose to sign up for the exchanges.

Nearly eight in 10 — 77 percent — said they had not been given a fee schedule to show much they’ll get paid if they sign up.

The survey invited doctors to anonymously share opinions about the new health care law, and many took time out of their busy days to vent.

“Obama Care wants to start right away, but who see all these new patients???? Not me,” e-mailed one doc.

Another said, “I plan to retire if this disaster is implemented. This is a train wreck.”

“I refuse to participate in the exchange plans! I am completely opposed to this new law,” said a third respondent.

One doctor recycled the mantra used to attack addictions: “The solution is simple: Just say no.”

One physician was so disgusted, he threatened to taken only cash patients going forward.

“I am seriously considering opting out of all insurance plans including Medicare because of [ObamaCare].”

Some physicians said the pressure on insurance carriers to control costs is leading to rationed care.

“OBAMACARE is a disaster. I have already seen denial of medication, denial of referrals,” one doc said.

And they worry that stingy payments for medical services offered by insurers could put some doctors out of business and force others into retirement.

“Any doctor who accepts the exchange is just a bad businessman/woman. Pays terrible,” argued one doctor.

Said another MD, “Can’t imagine any doctors would be willing to work for so little money? All doctors should boycott.”

Doctors complained they’ve gotten the shaft for years even before ObamaCare.

“I get screwed from insurance companies already. I refuse to get screwed any longer,” one doctor said.

Others said they don’t have enough information to make an informed choice.

“This is a joke. We are flying blind,” said one doctor.

Hmmm the website is simply the tip of the iceburg. Prediction: More Chaos. Status: Ongoing Trainwreck (h/t to Instapundit)

You can have the government control costs or you can implement ideas such as “reference pricing” explained in this Wall Street Journal article: Comparison Shopping for Knee Surgery (The same procedure might cost $20,000 or $120,000. Here’s one way to bring down prices.)

Does Barack Obama Know Anything?.

  • NSA spying on Angela Merkel
  • Benghazi Attack
  • IRS Scandal
  • Fast and Furious
  • Obamacare
    • Screwed up website
    • You can keep your plan
    • You can keep your doctor and the list goes on.

Conclusion:

With all these problems coming to light the President has shown us one of two things Either he really is clueless about what is going around him, preferring to let his subordinates run things the way they want to and when things don’t work out, these same subordinates prefer to not tell him about them. Or he is the most deceptive president of the modern era, doing whatever he wants and lying to the public and not worrying about getting caught, and when he does, he just denies knowledge of what is happening

Either way, this is a problem for this country. Our allies no longer trust us, our enemies don’t fear us and our citizens no longer know who or what to believe, all of which causes a major problem.

Washington, we have a problem. Oh, and it’s a problem you can NOT solve. Only “we the people” can solve it so butt out and STFU.

Duh: Obama admin. knew millions could not keep their health insurance

Anyone with common sense and that was “health insurance aware” knew. Obama admin. knew millions could not keep their health insurance – Investigations. And anyone with an open mind that asked questions would know as well. Of course, you would have to get your news from somewhere besides the MSM.

President Obama repeatedly assured Americans that after the Affordable Care Act became law, people who liked their health insurance would be able to keep it. But millions of Americans are getting or are about to get cancellation letters for their health insurance under Obamacare, say experts, and the Obama administration has known that for at least three years.

Duh.

Buried in Obamacare regulations from July 2010 is an estimate that because of normal turnover in the individual insurance market, “40 to 67 percent” of customers will not be able to keep their policy. And because many policies will have been changed since the key date, “the percentage of individual market policies losing grandfather status in a given year exceeds the 40 to 67 percent range.”

That means the administration knew that more than 40 to 67 percent of those in the individual market would not be able to keep their plans, even if they liked them.

Yet President Obama, who had promised in 2009, “if you like your health plan, you will be able to keep your health plan,” was still saying in 2012, “If [you] already have health insurance, you will keep your health insurance.”

That my friends make Obama either a liar or too ignorant to be President. The article goes on to point out the real number is closer to 80%.

The White House does not dispute that many in the individual market will lose their current coverage, but argues they will be offered better coverage in its place, and that many will get tax subsidies that would offset any increased costs. “One of the main goals of the law is to ensure that people have insurance they can rely on – that doesn’t discriminate or charge more based on pre-existing conditions. The consumers who are getting notices are in plans that do not provide all these protections – but in the vast majority of cases, those same insurers will automatically shift their enrollees to a plan that provides new consumer protections and, for nearly half of individual market enrollees, discounts through premium tax credits,” said White House spokesperson Jessica Santillo.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whoopie doo. I’m really tired of the “old plans suck” argument. Of course, some of the old plans DID suck but a majority of them did not.

Also, NO the carrier can NOT automatically shift their enrollees to a qualified plan. EVEN IF THEY COULD, they could NOT shift those who are eligible for a subsidy. The ONLY way to get a subsidy is to purchase a plan through the exchange. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY.

Of course if the ends justify the means then why not lie? Why not be ignorant? Why not be both?

Inquiring minds want to know… Does Barack Obama Know Anything?

To me the answer is a resounding “NO”.

Policy cancellations, higher premiums add to frustration over Obamacare

Policy cancellations, higher premiums add to frustration over Obamacare – CBS News.

I thought you could keep your plan…

In California, Kaiser Permanente terminated policies for 160,000 people. In Florida, at least 300,000 people are losing coverage.

That includes 56-year-old Dianne Barrette. Last month, she received a letter from Blue Cross Blue Shield informing her as of January 2014, she would lose her current plan. Barrette pays $54 a month. The new plan she’s being offered would run $591 a month — 10 times more than what she currently pays.

Barrette said, “What I have right now is what I am happy with and I just want to know why I can’t keep what I have. Why do I have to be forced into something else?”

Although Dianne is eligible for subsidies, which will reduce the cost of her coverage somewhat.

To repeat myself, not to mention Obama many times, I thought you could keep your plan. The typical response is if you have a plan that is from a time prior to when the Obamacare plans graced the earth, it’s so inferior that there is no reason any person with an ounce of intelligence could possibly consider “keeping their plan.”

Thankfully I CAN keep my plan because it qualifies under the grandfathered provision of the ACA. Also, Children’s Hospital sure thought the $200,000 to $300,000 they received from a ‘worthless plan’ was plenty fine.
