Be like China

Obama wants the United States to be more like China.

He says…

“Their ports, their train systems, their airports are vastly superior to us now, which means if you are a corporation deciding where to do business you’re starting to think, “Beijing looks like a pretty good option. Why aren’t we doing the same thing?”

And this is how they do it…

There was no consultation with the public on the terminal. Nor was there any public debate about the construction of Beijing’s third runway, notwithstanding the noise pollution already suffered by thousands of nearby residents.

Chinese official Xu Li said, Once a plan is made, it is executed. “Democracy”, she says, “sacrifices efficiency.”

Dan Reihl concludes…

And Barack Obama wants America to be more like China? You are kidding me, right?

Well, it is change, I guess. But does Barack Obama really represent the kind of change that America wants? Or maybe he and some of his radical friends should simply move to Beijing.

Somehow I don’t think Barack is kidding. Of course, typical liberals are so certain that they are correct that they would love the opportunity to bypass debate. I see it in Boulder all the time where it never occurs to liberals that the person they’re talking to might not agree with them. Everyone thinks the same!

Freedom of the press

Well not in China. Prior to the Olympics China had free access for reporters during the games. Certainly they must have understood this meant more then just the athletes and the government stooges?

On Wednesday, the day after her op-ed ran in the Journal, Ms. Hook received threatening phone calls from a man who refused to identify himself and asked repeatedly where she lived. “My name is Tang,” he said, giving only his last name. “I tried calling you yesterday but your phone was off. Where do you live?” Ms. Hook asked whether she had met him. “You haven’t met me, but you know what I do.” He then asked about Wang Yuying and Wang Yuping, two women profiled in her article. He called again several hours later demanding to know whether Ms. Hook had met them.

China is not a safe place for people who want freedom to investigate, report and express themselves. Which makes one wonder why a company like Google was so eager to flush their cache containing articles reference younger ages for the Chinese gymnasts.

Buffett: …”Wall Street has been kind of a nudist beach”

Buffett says the economy isn’t likely to improve until 2009…

Warren Buffett said the U.S. economy is unlikely to improve before 2009, and there was a “reasonable chance” that Fannie Mae (FNM.N) and Freddie Mac (FRE.N) shareholders would be wiped out though the companies themselves are too big to fail.

The bright spot is that 2009 isn’t that far away!

Regarding those who haven’t been acting in a financially responsible way…

“You always find out who’s been swimming naked when the tide goes out. We found out that Wall Street has been kind of a nudist beach,”

On Fannie and Freddie..

“They’re too big to fail,” Buffett said. “That doesn’t mean that the equity can’t get wiped out, and it almost has. In a practical sense, as institutions, they don’t have any net worth.”

Buffett forecast that “you’ll see some action fairly soon” to support the companies, but that he has not been approached to assist in any bailout. He said “nothing is going to happen” to investors in the companies’ insured mortgages or debt, but “the equity and preferred stock is another question.”

IOC and underage gymnasts

Disappointing but not unexpected.

But the IOC’s sports director, Christophe Dubi, added, “So far, everything that has been received demonstrates we have no problem for the eligibility for the competitors.”

There is only one way that this is going to be resolved: The Chinese government will have to investigate its own gymnastics federation.

What are the chances of that?

If history is an indication, it could happen.

We shall see I suppose!

Time to get running

“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a lion or a gazelle – when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.”

Coolest in five years

The first half of 2008 that is. Tell me it ain’t so!

The first half of 2008 was the coolest for at least five years, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said on Wednesday.

The whole year will almost certainly be cooler than recent years, although temperatures remain above the historical average.

Of course, for the global warming kool-aid drinkers out there the article goes on…

Global temperatures vary annually according to natural cycles. For example, they are driven by shifting ocean currents, and dips do not undermine the case that man-made greenhouse gas emissions are causing long-term global warming, climate scientists say.

That was a close one, eh? (bold is mine).

They must be really worried about backlash or that their data will be misinterpreted by day to day citizens as they pile on that global warming is a real, ever present danger…

The past decade ending in 2007 was the hottest since reliable records began around 1850, according to the WMO. World temperatures are about 0.74 Celsius (1.2 F) higher than a century ago.

The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group of hundreds of scientists, last year said global warming was “unequivocal” and that manmade greenhouse gas emissions were very likely part of the problem.

Where is that kool-aid?

Typical dose of Daily Camera common sense

Erika Stutzman of the Daily Camera pontificates on “common sense” trash and recycling. First she claims…

It has long befuddled consumers why a little old lady living alone and throwing away 2 cubic feet of trash a week is charged the exact same amount as her neighbors, a family of five — including two in diapers — who fill up their giant 96-gallon containers with abandon. But there you are.

That simply has not been my experience in Boulder County. I agree it certainly wasn’t pay per volume, but there was a price difference and the little old lady paid less.

Erika is quite pleased with the “pay as you throw” concept and I agree with her. Unfortunately, she combines this with the misconception that free recycling is thrown in…

So it pleases the Camera that local communities are moving toward pay-as-you-throw systems for garbage: You pay based on the amount of trash you throw out, usually with free recycling thrown in for good measure. And the more you recycle, the less you throw away and pay. It’s good for landfills and pocketbooks alike

Hmmm, a few comments here:

1. First: Hello Erika, recycling is not free, pure and simple. Perhaps it isn’t charged for, but calling it free is an insult to your readers and reveals little understanding of economics on your part (no surprise there, working for the Daily Camera and all).

2. Secondly, with Western Disposal I’m paying $10/month for “free” recycling and compostable pick up that I don’t use.

And the last two sentences above are also telling:

And the more you recycle, the less you throw away and pay. It’s good for landfills and pocketbooks alike.

So pay as you go seems like a good incentive to recycle, but unfortunately, at least in Boulder County’s case, they couldn’t leave well enough alone and take pleasure in mandating:

1. Implementing pay as you throw (we’re in agreement on that)
2. Mandatory payment for recycling regardless of use
3. Although actually using the recycling and composting service isn’t mandatory, it sure is hard to get Western Disposal to pick up the containers.

What an interesting experiment it would have been simply to implement “pay as you go” and see how many people signed up for recycling and composting voluntarily. Erika, now that would be common sense.

The fact that the Boulder County Commissioners weren’t able to do this reveals the following:

1. They have very little faith in their fellow citizens to respond to economic incentives. A typical Boulder liberal mindset. If the government doesn’t mandate it, it must not be a worthwhile effort.

2. From a larger point of view the citizens of not only Boulder but of the Nation have become more and more accustomed to the government taking care of them. If it’s important to do, I’ll know it when a politician tells me important. I don’t need to think for myself or take responsibility for my actions.

Well, I’m off to call Western Disposal to see when they can pick up the composting cart they left behind when they picked up the recycle cart laying right beside it yesterday.

One out of two

Well I guess I jinxed myself by posting that two of my three trash carts would be gone today. Western Disposal, in their infinite wisdom decided to only take my recycle cart and leave the composting cart. I didn’t get around to calling them today, so I’ll do that tomorrow morning and report back.

IOC looking into underage gymnasts

Nice to see the IOC look into the Chinese underage gymnast accusations; sure had to twist their arms though.

The International Olympic Committee has ordered an investigation into the age of Chinese gymnast He Kexin, The Times of London reports. Faced with almost insurmountable evidence which suggests that He is two years younger than the birth date listed on her Chinese passport, the IOC has launched an inquiry that could result in the stripping of He’s gold medals.

PETA tactics

Michele Catalano comments on the “preaching to the choir” tactics of PETA and other like minded groups…

I have no problem with PETA’s message, and I have nothing against people who want to save the environment, save the whales, feed the children, hug the trees, or make this world a better place in their own special way. It’s not the message, nor even the messenger. It’s the way the message is delivered. Maybe if these groups didn’t use the equivalent of a letter bomb as means of delivery, more people would take them seriously.

Bold is mine.

Drain America first

John Stossel on the myth of energy independence.

Most every politician and pundit says “energy independence” is a great idea. Presidents have promised it for 35 years. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we were self-sufficient, protected from high prices, supply disruptions and political machinations?

Turns out the answer is probably not. Read more to find out why.

What a surprise, underage gymnasts

I believe this Chinese underage gynmast article is from the London Times via Fox news…

A determined U.S. computer expert has delved into cached pages on the Internet to unearth Chinese official documents showing a gymnast who took gold in the uneven bars competition, edging the U.S.’s Nastia Liukin, may indeed be underage.

I’d say this isn’t too surprising. Unfortunately, this isn’t either…

First he simply tried Google, only to find that an official listing by the Chinese sports administration that had given her age could no longer be accessed. Then he tried the Google cache, only to find that He’s name had been removed.

Finally, he tried the cache of Chinese search engine Baidu. There, he found that Baidu lists two spreadsheets in He’s name, both giving her date of birth as January 1, 1994 — making her 14 years and 220 days old and too young to compete at the Beijing games.

What is it with google? Really makes one believe that their software that takes down blogs has a political bias. I’m sure Baidu will be improving their ability to flush their cache, perhaps google can give them some lessons?

Nashville schools teach students to understand math

Apparently this is a “new” idea.

“When we found shortcomings, we went back and taught it again. We pulled kids for tutoring. I just break it down to little pieces of math and show (students) what they mean so they can remember. I’m also big on homework to keep them on their toes.”

Joanne remarks…

Checking to see if students understand, reteaching concepts they missed and making students practice skills . . . This is a new idea?

It’s an idea waiting to be discovered by my 7th graders’ math teacher. Ok, ok, I only know the teacher doesn’t believe in students practicing skills outside of class.

Are Dem’s living in a bubble?

According to Power Line, if Obama picks Joe Biden as his running mate they are.

Some time in the next 48 hours, Barack Obama will announce his running mate. The current favorite seems to be Joe Biden. I hope it’s true: if Obama chooses Biden, it will be more evidence that he, and the Democrats generally, are living in a bubble.

The result: two lightweights…

The problem is that, whereas Obama is a young lightweight, Biden is an old lightweight–Obama with a hair transplant.

I believe!

Google and blog blocking

It appears google’s software bug that takes down blogs has a political bias…

The problem Google describes is a software bug, one that should not affect one philosophy more than another. And yet the reports of mistaken blog takedowns by Google seem to be all from right-wing bloggers. The latest public report, cited in the New York Sun article linked to above, is of Mitchell Langbert’s Blog. Langbert blogs, he says, mostly on academic matters, and some on politics. Dating back to the last round of closures the Atlas Shrugs blog has a list of blogs taken down by Google, many anti-Obama, some pro-Hillary.

I disagree with the authors conclusion (bold is mine)..

The evidence increasingly leads me to believe that someone is gaming the Google system to knock off blogs they wish to suppress. I don’t believe for a second that Google is consciously involved, but by now they should know they need either to fix their software or switch to practices like WordPress’s. They’ve got enough money to hire people to do this stuff.

My politcal postings are more locally focused, but c’mon google, make my day!
