The First amendment

Power Line comments on both Barrack trying to silence the American Issues Project and the Denver Police arresting an ABC news producer outside the Brown Palace Hotel in downtown Denver.

I’m not ready to jump to the conlusion that this arrest was politically motivated, but I’m more than willing to accept it with a little evidence. That said, I think the Denver Police are thugs. The two undercover agents that wailed on a bicycle rider outside Coors Field pretty much sealed it for me.

Red Light Cameras don’t work

Hmmm, I can’t imagine Boulder would install red light camera’s “for the money” can you? Of course, if they don’t work, why else would you do it?

“The rigorous studies clearly show red-light cameras don’t work,” said lead author Barbara Langland-Orban, professor and chair of health policy and management at the USF College of Public Health. “Instead, they increase crashes and injuries as drivers attempt to abruptly stop at camera intersections.”
Comprehensive studies from North Carolina, Virginia, and Ontario have all reported cameras are associated with increases in crashes. The study by the Virginia Transportation Research Council also found that cameras were linked to increased crash costs. The only studies that conclude cameras reduced crashes or injuries contained “major research design flaws,” such as incomplete data or inadequate analyses, and were always conducted by researchers with links to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The IIHS, funded by automobile insurance companies, is the leading advocate for red-light cameras since insurance companies can profit from red-light cameras by way of higher premiums due to increased crashes and citations.

Perhaps it’s a hidden tax? Of course, I don’t think it’s so hidden…

A 2001 paper by the Office of the Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives reported that red-light cameras are “a hidden tax levied on motorists.” The report came to the same conclusions that all of the other valid studies have, that red-light cameras are associated with increased crashes and that the timings at yellow lights are often set too short to increase tickets for red-light running. That’s right, the state actually tampers with the yellow light settings to make them shorter, and more likely to turn red as you’re driving through them.

In fact, six U.S. cities have been found guilty of shortening the yellow light cycles below what is allowed by law on intersections equipped with cameras meant to catch red-light runners. Those local governments have completely ignored the safety benefit of increasing the yellow light time and decided to install red-light cameras, shorten the yellow light duration, and collect the profits instead.

The cities in question include Union City, CA, Dallas and Lubbock, TX, Nashville and Chattanooga, TN, and Springfield, MO, according to Motorists.org, which collected information from reports from around the country.

Apparently it’s different in Boulder as this study maintains.

Freedom of speech

The Washington DC examiner editorializes on O’bama’s reaction to the recent ad run by The American Issues Project (main contributor the same as the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth). Interestingly enough, apparently FOX and CNN have refused to run the ad.

Here’s the controversial text…

Here’s the key portion of the ad’s text: “Barack Obama is friends with Ayers, defending him as, quote, ‘Respectable’ and ‘Mainstream.’ Obama’s political career was launched in Ayers’ home. And the two served together on a left-wing board. Why would Barack Obama be friends with someone who bombed the Capitol and is proud of it? Do you know enough to elect Barack Obama?”

and the Obama campaign reaction…

The Obama campaign describes the ad as “false, despicable and outrageous,” according to The Associated Press. If the ad is false, the Obama campaign should have no trouble refuting it, which would likely be sufficient to persuade stations to decline the ad. Yet we’ve seen no such refutation.

Which leads the Washington DC Examiner to ask the very basic question…
Does Obama support free speech or not?

Obama sounds like typical Boulder liberals that are very open minded until you disagree with them. Can’t wait for the Daily Camera editorial pages “opinion”.

Hot dogs and cancer…

Hot dogs increase risk of colon cancer, well when all the planets align; and to date myself, so does peanut-butter.

A new TV commercial shows kids eating hot dogs in a school cafeteria and one little boy’s haunting lament: “I was dumbfounded when the doctor told me I have late-stage colon cancer.”

It’s a startling revelation in an ad that vilifies one of America’s most beloved, if maligned, foods, while stoking fears about a dreaded disease.

As Michele Catalano statements regarding PETA ring quite true in this case as well…

Maybe if these groups didn’t use the equivalent of a letter bomb as means of delivery, more people would take them seriously.

And of course,

The bottom line from several nutritionists familiar with the ad is this: Hot dogs aren’t exactly a “health food,” but eating one every now and then probably won’t hurt you.

“My concern about this campaign is it’s giving the indication that the occasional hot dog in the school lunch is going to increase cancer risk,” said Colleen Doyle, the American Cancer Society’s nutrition director. “An occasional hot dog isn’t going to increase that risk.”

The groups leader has this to say…

Dr. Neal Barnard, president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, called the ad “a way to raise appropriate concern about a deadly concern.” Barnard also heads The Cancer Project, an offshoot of his anti-meat advocacy group.

This egghead needs to read Michele’s PETA article. Too much money, too little common sense and a bunch of wacko’s.

Answer: “because you hate them”

and the question is:

“Why don’t men want to commit/get married/settle down?”

Rachel takes on “man-bashing” as only she can. She concludes….

The real clue into this writer’s psyche is right there, a few paragraphs in, when she says she would/could not disparage her marriage. You just did, dumbass. A LOT. But it’s never about these women; not their fault all men are such drooling retards. You’re supposed to admire her for sacrificing so much and putting up with all that bullshit. Sure thing, Sugar-Tits.

Drunkblogging

Instapundit reports that Steven Green is “drunkblogging” the DNC events. If I felt so inclined I’d have to do the same thing. Fortunately, it’s not worth the effort to me so I can spare myself the brain damage in more ways then one.

If you can’t win on the merits, file a lawsuit

Way to go Barrack. Democrats that are worried about impositions on their civil liberties by the present administration, does this concern you ????

Unfortunately, the answer to the above is all too easy to guess.

Pollution levels today vs 100 years ago…

Next time you hear the alarmists (and your typical Boulderite) mouthing off about how bad everything is from global warming to greenhouse gases and pollution; remind them of the tale Greenland’s ice tells

According to a study by the Desert Research Institute, pollutant levels at the beginning of the 20th century were two to five times higher than current levels of pollution. Researchers attribute the decrease in pollution levels to the advent of more efficient coal-burning technologies, as well as legislation aimed at reducing emissions.

Of course, the picture of India’s giant coal plant is what it is!

BIden ok with Boulder

According to Daily Camera web polling, 58% of participants believe Joe Biden was a good or excellent choice to be Obama’s running mate.

I think Joe’s a great choice if you want the Republicans to win. Unfortunately, that wasn’t a choice in the poll.

Vote in the poll here.

Betsy on Obama-Biden

Betsy’s analysis of the Obama-Biden candidacy should be required reading. This snippet stands out…

So now the Democrats have two guys who think they’re smarter than other people and who like to talk a lot. They’re the all arrogant, all talk ticket. Perhaps the McCain people can find that C-Span tape and run clips of the friendly JoeBiden telling some guy he meets in a campaign event that he thinks he has a much higher I.Q. That will go over big.

More China: underage gymnast

The London Times reports that the investigation continues into the age of gymnast He Kexin

The governing body of world gymnastics has demanded additional documentary evidence to prove that five gold medal-winning China gymnasts were old enough to compete in the Olympic Games.

The coach states the following documentation should be adequate…

The federation did not specify precisely what documents it would require to satisfy itself that the two gymnasts were eligible. However, Lu Shanzan, China’s coach, said that the documents that had now been passed to the federation included He’s present and former passport, her ID card and family residence permit.

Lu said that all of these documents showed her to have been born in 1992 and complained that coaching staff and the girl’s parents were indignant and upset at the investigation. “Surely it’s not possible that these documents are still not sufficient proof of her birthdate,” he said. “The passports were issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The identity card was issued by China’s Ministry of Public Security. If these valid documents are not enough to clarify this problem, then what will you believe?”

In most countries that might be the case!

Of course, is this reported in China?

The investigation has not been reported in the state newspapers. Leading Chinese news websites also failed to cover the story, and yesterday sites running reports of the inquiry appeared to have been closed down. Even the debates of the issue in internet chatrooms, which raged yesterday morning, disappeared in the afternoon as site-hosting companies moved to censor what could be a sensitive topic.

Are you listening Barack Obama?

Before internet debate was silenced one commenter states…

“Plank of Wood” commented: “Changing one’s age in China, especially in the past, is very common. When I was at school I changed my age to get into the class I wanted. Later I changed it back.” All of these comments had vanished from the web by the afternoon.
