Bring on Government run healthcare….

Hospital patient so shocked at dirty ward she climbed out of bed to clean it herself

But the last place she expected to need her skills was in hospital – where she was a patient.

The sick 48-year-old was so disgusted at the conditions after three days on a ‘filthy’ ward that she grabbed the antibacterial fluid dispenser at the end of her bed and some hand towels from the bathroom. She set about cleaning her four-bed ward, even going down on hands and knees to sanitise the floor as she dragged her drip trolley behind her.

The UK, a great place to get sick.

Flip flops

I’ve been a little out of touch lately, but Obama sure seems to be getting a free pass on flip flops.

I’m shocked, absolutely shocked that the local paper hasn’t noticed. No doubt they would have ripped President Bush a new one long before now. Of course, as long as it’s for the right (whoops… “left”) cause the methods suddenly don’t matter. A controlled town hall meeting, no problem. Congress passing bills they haven’t read; no problem. Not to mention continuing the Bush wiretapping program and keeping Guantanamo Bay open.

Don’t worry, be happy until it’s too late. How long is the press going to allow Obama to lead them around by their nose ring? Perhaps I should be some engraved Obama nose rings and send them to the liberal press?

Entrepreneurship

Tigerhawk suggests that the decline in entrepreneurship is due to added regulations (one regulation at a time) and decreasing reward.

Or perhaps Americans are starting fewer businesses because our local, state and federal governments, in a thousand little steps, have increased the risks and lowered the rewards. When (to pick one obvious example) you massively increase the financial and managerial cost of simply being a public company, you have effectively lowered the exit returns for start-up investors and therefore raised the hurdle necessary to attract the financing to found the business in the first place.

Perhaps local venture capitalist Brad Feld can weigh in on this (see sidebar). Also, I was up in Breckenridge the last few days and the Summit County newspaper had a front page picture of a lemonade stand supporting an article about the increase in the number of new business licenses being issued. I suspect these are not businesses that need venture capitalists however.

Acorn Role in Census Challenged

Seems like anyone with half a brain would support the goal of removing ACORN from invovlement in the 2010 census. Therein lies the problem I suppose.

Pound Sand

Honduras to OAS: Pound Sand

Roberto Micheletti, appointed acting president by the Honduran legislature, responded by telling the OAS that Zelaya would be arrested immediately upon entering Honduras. The only way in which Zelaya would return to the presidency, Micheletti promised, would be at the head of a foreign army:

Obama has got to stop picking the wrong sides. Good grief, teaming up with Chavez and the OAS?

Honduras had legitimate reason to remove Zelaya from office, even if arguably they used illegitimate means to do so. Zelaya repeatedly violated the constitution of Honduras, first by attempting to hold the referendum, and second by illegally firing the chief of the Army, who reports to both the president and the legislature in Honduras.

I love it when a plan comes together.

EPA suppresses internal global warming study

and this is a surprise? LOL.

Scientific findings at odds with the Obama Administration’s views on carbon dioxide and climate change are being suppressed as a result of political pressure, officials at the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) charge.

“This suppression of valid science for political reasons is beyond belief,” said CEI General Counsel Sam Kazman. “EPA’s conduct is even more outlandish because it flies in the face of the president’s widely-touted claim that ‘the days of science taking a back seat to ideology are over.’”

Guarantee you won’t hear about this suppressed story in the Daily Camera. Most of the 25 square miles has already drunk the kool-aid and the paper is glad to serve as much of it as possible.

Highway 36 cyclist madness

Driving into town on Highway 36 from the North this evening at about 5:15, there’s pretty much a constant stream of cars heading from Boulder North towards Lyons.

Near the old Beach Aircraft building there’s a huge peloton of cyclists, at places 3 – 4 cyclists wide heading North as well. There were numerous cyclists drifting across the white line impeding the flow of traffic.

The Sheriff should really stop hassling cyclists for not putting their foot down at a stop sign in Jamestown (see Jessica Yates letter to the editor) and worry about the recklessness on Highway 36. I guarantee that on a Saturday or Sunday morning they can have a field day writing tickets at the North Broadway, Hwy 36 intersection. It would save a lot more lives then worrying about a stop sign in Jamestown.

Blaming Bush

Obama can only ride the “Blame Bush” excuse for so long in most of the US. In a liberal/progressive hot spot like Boulder, the excuse is probably good until he starts his 2nd term.

If he doesn’t start a 2nd term, somehow that will be Bush’s fault too.

More good news…

Bicycle Blockade

The temperature is rising as drivers and cyclists find it hard to co-exist on Boulder county mountain roads

Tensions between drivers and bicyclists in rural Boulder County have reached a new level, with fliers circulating in mountain neighborhoods asking drivers to blockade next month’s Sunrise Century ride.

From Colorado State Trooper David Hall…

“As frustrating as it might be for some, they (cyclists) have the right to use the roads,” Hall said. “When we see bicyclists who are disregarding the rules of the road, we do enforce that.”

Trooper Hall, I can name you a number of places you can set up shop and write ticket after ticket on cyclists. Is there a database where the public can see the history of tickets written on cyclists? It would be nice if the local paper would investigate this but no chance of that.

It’s going to be interesting time. In general I sympathise with the drivers, which is no surprise to readers of this blog. That said, I do my best to keep my distance from cyclists, it’s a lose/lose situation.

Hey, don’t forget to read the comments, that’s where the action is!

Healthcare reform effects capital spending

Yup, it takes money to run health care. Sure sounds like there’s going to be a whole lot less of it.

“Mercy Health Partners said Thursday it has shelved plans to build a new downtown hospital because of the economy and uncertainty over the national health care debate. . . . The Obama administration has announced its intention to enact sweeping health care reform this year. ‘The only certainty is that reimbursements for Medicare and Medicaid are going to go down,’

Coming up, a Physician shortage. Doesn’t take a genius to see it coming.

Defending newspapers

Jim Martin, a former CU regent, expounds on the death of Newspapers and it’s effects on a free society. He postulates…

We are witnessing the death of reporting in this country, and that loss threatens our republic far more than anything an extreme left- or right-wing government could ever do.

As an example…

Just this year, The Daily Telegraph, a London newspaper, found that dozens of members of Parliament were fleecing the public by billing the government for personal expenses such as cleaning a private moat. This expose, months in the making, emerged on the paper’s website as well as in print. The worst offenders felt the wrath of the voters in the subsequent election.

Perhaps it’s because I don’t get the local paper, but I can think of many local issues that the Daily Camera could investigate but doesn’t. For example…

1. Red light cameras. Are they about safety or revenue? What would happen if the yellow light timing was increased by 1 second at intersections that have these cameras? Georgia’s tried it and it made the camera’s unprofitable and accident and injuries were reduced as well. The fact is a little research and a critical mind would easily show it’s all about the money. Of course, the Daily Camera knows what it’s like to not have much money and they’re not about to criticize the City. The more money and power the City has the better.

2. Bicycle rules of the road. The Daily Camera has been pretty good at providing a forum for pro and con on cyclists actions on the road. Why not take an actual video camera, go out to some intersections and see what’s going on? Go to the intersection of Hwy 36 and North Broadway and tape the intersection for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. Another good place would be Hwy 36 just south of the old Beech Aircraft buildings and document the interaction between cyclists and motorists.

On the last two weekends during my single trips into town, on Hwy 36 I have seen cyclists suddenly swerve out into the car lane to pass other cyclists. The first time I was far enough away that it was hard to determine if it was a real case of carelessness or arrogance, but the 2nd one was definitely irresponsible.

Are there drivers at fault as well. No doubt about it. The camera shouldn’t be picking favorites though, should it?

Also, it has already happened at the intersection of Hwy 36 and North Boulder Road, but more cyclists are going to be killed on Hwy 36. Perhaps shining a little light on the interaction between drivers and cyclists would help prevent some deaths.

Oh, and lets not forget the cyclists riding in the dark on Hwy 36 with no (or vastly inadequate) lights and reflectors. This should be easy to document, although there probably aren’t as many violaters at the moment since the days are so long. Try August and September.

3. County Commissioners. I try and stay away from the power troika as much as possible. I’m sure they operate above the law at (whoops, I meant “within the law” really!) all times, but any time so few people have so much much power, there absolutely have to be some issues to investigate about how they weld this power. Rarely, very rarely is the paper critical of the commissioners. It just seems that the paper is much to cozy with the local government. Of course, this is because the editors of the paper and the County Commissioners would all like to go back in time and make almost all of Boulder County Open Space if they could.

Ok, then Jim Martin concludes…

When newspapers close, then news doesn’t get out. While every despotic country around the world is tyrannical in its own way, the one thing they all have in common is repression of a free press. Corrupt leaders, from small-town driveway pavers to murderous thugs, cannot abide the bright light of independent reporting and commentary.

The crisis in the American press is much more than a series of sad stories in the business section. When American steel mills shut down, construction companies could still buy I-beams. When clothiers went overseas, there was no shortage of shirts and suits. But nothing from foreign shores can replace the power of the American press. The newspaper crisis is far more threatening than the problems with banks and insurance companies.

When Jim Martin talks about the free press and puts them on such a pedestal, he simply can’t be talking about the main stream media that I’m familiar with, can he?
