No can see: Abu Ahmed, also known as Mohammed Jamal

We’re talking Egypt allowing access  to the only publicly known suspect in custody in connection with the Benghazi  terror attack.

Abu Ahmed, also known as Mohammed Jamal, is suspected of establishing  Islamist training camps in Eastern Libya where militants who took part in the  Sept. 11 Benghazi terrorist attack were able to train.

Ahmed is not suspected of directly taking part in the attack which left four  Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, dead. But this is at least the  second time U.S. interrogators have been denied access to a suspect held by a  foreign government.

Remind me, exactly why is President Obama is requesting $1.55 billion in aid to Egypt?  What exactly, short of exploding a nuclear weapon, would Egypt have to do that would result in the United States witholding foreign aid?

Sequester: Did CNN changed their name to FOX news?

CNN: If Sequestration Is So Horrible, Why Did WH Propose It?

WOLF BLITZER, CNN HOST: Gloria, explain why if this is such a horrible idea, these forced spending cuts, why did the White House come up with this plan in 2011 to begin with?
GLORIA BORGER: If you noticed, Wolf, the President kept calling this a “manufactured crisis.” Well, in fact, it was manufactured right here in Washington by the President of the United States and voted for, 174 House Republicans voted for these forced spending cuts so it would force them to do their jobs. So, now we’re in this crazy situation in Washington where publicly people are protesting, politicians saying, “we can’t do this,” but privately, there are liberal Democrats who say, “You know what? This wouldn’t be such a bad thing, we could cut defense.” And there are conservative Republicans  who are saying, “You know what? Five percent across the board in domestic spending, not such a bad idea.”

You can’t make this stuff up.

Power of Chelyabinsk asteroid blast

Estimates raised for nuclear-sized asteroid blast that hit Russia

The new estimates, based on additional readings from a sensor network built to detect nuclear blasts, suggest the meteor released the energy equivalent of nearly 500 kilotons of TNT. That’s about 30 times the power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.

What size object creates a blast that’s 30 times the power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.

NASA now says the Chelyabinsk object must have been about 55 feet wide (17 meters wide) with a mass of 10,000 tons before it entered Earth’s atmosphere.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “be careful out there”.

Gun control pushback

Repurcussions…

Here in Colorado: Colorado ammo magazine maker Magpul threatens to leave state over gun bill

Colorado’s largest and most profitable manufacturer of high-capacity ammunition magazines has vowed to leave the state if lawmakers pass a measure banning the devices — a move officials with the company say could cost hundreds of jobs and upward of $85 million in potential spending this year.

Magpul’s threat has Democratic lawmakers scrambling to strike a balance that remains true to their goal of limiting the number of rounds a magazine can hold without frightening off businesses.

Of course, then we have the 3-D printer issue: 3D printing could muzzle new gun laws

Back to pushback, in NY State: Firearms manufacturer stops sales to NY state officials

If the leaders of the State of New York are willing to limit the right of the free and law abiding citizens of New York to arm themselves as they see fit under the Rights enumerated to all citizens of the United State through the Second Amendment, we feel as though the legislators and government entities within the State of New York should have to abide by the same restrictions.

This action has caused a division of the people into classes: Those the government deems valuable enough to protect with modern firearms, and those whose lives have been deemed as having less value, and whom the government has decided do not deserve the right to protect themselves with the same firearms. Olympic Arms will not support such behavior or policy against any citizen of this great nation.

As Glenn Reynolds likes to say: PUNCHING BACK TWICE AS HARD

I’m sure the 3-D printer legislation will start later this year.

James Grant finds it very curious the 10 year Treasury is paying only 2%

News you should use:

Bond yields have been going down and bond prices have been going up for approximately 31 years.

Of course, two issues have to concern you to take this seriously:

  1. You are troubled that the United States Government borrows more than 40 cents of every dollar it spends
  2. You believe that: Something that can’t go on forever, won’t.  Debts that can’t be repaid, won’t be.  Promises that can’t be kept, won’t be.

As Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit fame says, “Make your plans accordingly“.

Update on Horn rage incident: License plate 893-EKG

Oh well, looks like James Ernst has worked out a plea deal with the Boulder County DA’s office.

James Ernst negotiated a deal with Boulder County prosecutors to plead guilty to two counts of harassment and two counts of improper use of a horn, but Boulder County Judge Noel Blum said he would not accept the deal.

The plea deal has been initially rejected as the victims were not notified. Inquiring minds want to know how justice can be servied without notifying the victims. All that said, I suspect the deal will go through. That’s sort of a bummer as I was going to be in the court room for this case!

Smart man (as much as it pains me to say it): Putin Turns Black Gold Into Bullion as Russia Out-Buys World

When Vladimir Putin says the U.S. is endangering the global economy by abusing its dollar monopoly, he’s not just talking. He’s betting on it.

Not only has Putin made Russia the world’s largest oil producer, he’s also made it the biggest gold buyer. His central bank has added 570 metric tons of the metal in the past decade, a quarter more than runner-up China, according to IMF datacompiled by Bloomberg. The added gold is also almost triple the weight of the Statue of Liberty.

Famed investor Jim Rogers is bullish on Russia:

Here are some of the excerpts, leaving out Maria Bartiromo’s “babbling”…

“… I’m buying Russia. Russia is terribly depressed, nobody likes Russia, nobody. I’m buying the bonds, the currency and the stocks.”

“… For the first time in 46 years I’ve decided to invest in Russia…. Everybody is pessimistic on Russia. Russia is changing, that’s how you make money. You find something that everybody hates, including me, including you, when it’s changing and that’s how you make money”.

I think Jim’s onto something here.

Really? Federal employees’ union head: Obama pay raise proposal ‘simply not enough’

Seems like there are two potential solutions:

  1. Go on Strike, although that may not be legal
  2. Find another job

My suggestion is “go for it”, with “it” being either alternative. Yes, I understand the raise is minimal after two years of no raises. If you really don’t like it, I suggest option #2 above. Furthermore, I suggest you speak with the Dept of the Treasury, or wherever they calculate the inflation rate, and point out the errors in their calcuations. According to them, there has been very little inflation in the last few years.

You can’t make this stuff up: Pelosi: There’s No ‘Spending Problem’

With the sequester set to kick in on March 1, President Obama and his Democrat allies are hell-bent on shifting the conversation away from proper government cuts, and toward higher taxes. On Sunday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) took to Fox News Sunday to explain that America does not have a spending problem. “It is almost a false argument to say that we have a spending problem. We have a budget deficit problem,” Pelosi insisted.

Well I can agree with Nancy that we have a budget deficit problem, however tax increases are not the way to address the issue. Less involvement by government in our everyday lives and a growing economy are part of the solution. Tax increases do not address either of those issues and in fact work against them.

I guess for the general population that wants the government to step in and deal with every issue, their right. Color me no friend of these people.

Obamacare avoidance is not just private industry: States Cutting Employee Hours to Avoid Obamacare Costs

The costs of Obamacare are not just hitting businesses this year–they are also hitting the government, and public employees as well. Virginia, for example, is about to limit part-time employees to 29 hours per week in order to avoid triggering Obamacare’s requirement that employers provide health insurance to those working 30 hours per week or more. The state cannot afford the $110 million annual cost of insurance.

Don’t forget educational institutions, both public and private, as well as restaurants and the hotel industry all taking the same action.

The article concludes with this commentary in regards to Obamacare:

Rather than dealing with the problem of uninsured part-time workers separately, the legislation overhauls the nation’s entire health insurance system–a system in which 85 percent of Americans were covered, and 80-90 percent were happy with their insurance. The economic cost is certain; the political cost somewhat less so–but neither is positive.

One really has to wonder why. The answer is fairly obvious, at least from the progressive point of view:

  1. It’s a giant step towards a single payor system, in fact probably as big a leap that could be made at the time.
  2. It’s in essence a cost shifting tax on the rich

Not to mention the bill has done absolutely nothing to control health care costs. I”m “looking forward” to the impending shortage of primary care physicians.
