“Because when it has happened in the past to such a reporter, it was a huge story”

Fox News Reporter Jana Winter Facing Jail For Protecting Source – Mainstream Media Yawns, Raising Questions Of Liberal Bias

report Forbes news reporter, Rick Unger , who declares himself as a liberal (byline “writing from the left on politics and policy”). Rick comments:

In conducting a Google search, I was able to find just one short piece in the Washington Post’s “National” section that was picked up from the AP. The story simply reported that Winter’s hearing in Colorado was not to be delayed. No editorial…no serious coverage…just a few paragraphs on the timing of Winter’s hearing.

There has been absolutely nothing on the subject that I could find in the New York Times while Huffington Post did run one piece telling Ms. Winter’s story.

In response to this profound lack of attention, stories have been running on Foxnews.com, Buzzfeed and the Daily Caller highlighting the fact that had it been a New York Times reporter looking at jail time, the story would be huge.

As one considered to be a member of the liberal media, I have to say that I could not agree more with the conservative publications that are pointing out the hypocrisy.

There is simply no denying that were a Washington Post reporter or a New York Times reporter or a Huffington Post reporter facing jail in similar circumstances, this would, indeed, be a giant story taking up untold column inches in these publications.

Rick then proceeds to slam the liberal media. Too back bad it’s so easy…

Why do I think this?

Because when it has happened in the past to such a reporter, it was a huge story.

This sort of treatment of a Fox News reporter by the more liberal media outlets is not only shameful, it is self-defeating. Turning a blind eye to any reporter who has done their job in this manner serves only to reveal that the publications ignoring the story are only interested in protecting the rights of a journalist when that journalist works for a news organization that meets with their approval.

The fact that there are media organizations that may not respect Fox News—for whatever reason—simply does not make Ms. Winter’s work any less important nor does it make Ms. Winter any less worthy of support.(emphasis added-Ed) You may not like her employer but that does not make Jana Winter less of a reporter—as proven by the fact that she was the one who successfully broke the story that landed her in the soup.

Shame on you…

Shame on any news organization that has not covered Ms. Winter’s predicament and shame on any organization that has failed to editorialize in support of her principled stand. None of you should be surprised if your lack of support for one of your own —and Jana Winter is one of your own—comes back to bite you in the nose sometime in the future when it is your reporter facing a few months in the pokey.

Is “doesn’t fit the narrative” a good enough defense for ignoring Jana Winter? Food for thought.

Yes, I realize the judge has delayed his decision for some time.

Student entitlement, scary as hell

Student to Rand Paul: I don’t want government to leave me alone | WashingtonExaminer.com.

During the Q&A session after Sen. Rand Paul’s speech Wednesday at Howard University, one student explained that he was not a fan of his view of government.

“You say you want to provide a government that leaves us alone; quite frankly, I don’t want that,” the student said. “I want a government that is going to help me.”

The student insisted that he wanted assistance for his college education and asked if Rand Paul supported a culture change within the nation.

Gag me.

Shield laws and students: Threat to press freedom unacceptable

Back in October of 2009, Freedom of the Press was apparently a concern to Erika Stutzman, the present editorial page editor of the Daily Camera.

But when Fox News reporter Jana Winter is threatened with jail time, Erika is silent. Must not fit the narrative. Perhaps Erika’s silence is related to Jana’s employer, Fox News, or in Boulderspeak, Faux News.

Wow, if it doesn’t fit the narrative, are you willing to sit quietly on the sidelines if Jana Winter goes to jail?

Jana Winter Gets Reprieve but Could Still Be Jailed Over Holmes Scoop

“In all of the time that I have worked as a journalist, I have always maintained my commitments to sources to keep the identities of confidential sources safe from disclosure,” Winter said in an affidavit filed with the court. “As a result, I enjoy an excellent reputation as an investigative journalist among my peers, and, as importantly, among the sources upon whom I rely to obtain information for my reporting. If this reputation were tarnished, it would severely compromise my ability to gather news, and would assuredly result in critical reports on public issues never seeing the light of the day.”

Time to speak up for your journalistic counterparts Erika… or not.

EPA: asked the environmental groups to “return the information.”

EPA acknowledges releasing personal details on farmers, senator slams agency | Fox News.

The Environmental Protection Agency acknowledged Tuesday that it released personal information on potentially thousands of farmers and ranchers to environmental groups, following concerns from congressional Republicans and agriculture groups that the release could endanger their safety.

According to a document obtained by FoxNews.com, the EPA said “some of the personal information that could have been protected … was released.” Though the EPA has already sent out the documents, the agency now says it has since redacted sensitive details and asked the environmental groups to “return the information.”

But Sen. John Thune, who originally complained about the release, slammed the EPA for trying to retroactively recover the sensitive data.

Do you really want the government to have access to your medical records? Can you not consider that information you provide to the government may eventually be used against you? I’m sure you’ve heard the story of the frog and the warm water vs. the frog and boiling water?

FINAL QUESTION: DO YOU BELIEVE THE ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS WILL RETURN THE RECORDS AND ERASE THEM FROM THEIR INTERNAL STORAGE AND PAPERWORK? REALLY?

The U.S. government sent a man to our door to pay $90 if one of us would answer a few questions and spit in a tube.

Althouse: The U.S. government sent a man to our door to pay $90 if one of us would answer a few questions and spit in a tube..

You really can’t make this stuff up. How long will it take the minions to realize that the returns in improved services the government will supposedly provide from analyzing this information are NOT worth the $90, loss of privacy and potential misuse of this information?

It depends. If you believe that government has all the answers I suppose never, or at least until you change your mind.

Boulderites: Green energy news you can use

Well, green energy news you should know, whether you like it or not.

Lou Dobbs ask the question that the MSM/legacy media SHOULD be asking: Where Are the White House’s Green Energy Winners?

One gets the idea that the government moonlighting as an investment banker is not a particularly good idea.

Is not cost too high for the Progressive green energy agenda? If there IS a price that is too high, what woudl that be?

Moving van coming for 900 City of Boulder prairie dogs

Boulder holding public meeting on plan to relocate 900 prairie dogs from city land – Boulder Daily Camera.

I’m speechless. They want to move NINE HUNDRED prairie dogs? To where?

The proposal is to move the prairie dogs to an area of open space land east of Colo. 93 and south of Coal Creek, and north of Colo. 128 and south of Boulder.

The proposed relocation site was formerly the site of a 155-acre prairie dog colony that died off.

Aren’t they supposed to be an endangered species or something? Aren’t they rodents or something?

Xcel: Boulder has no legal right to electricity customers in unincorporated county

Xcel: Boulder has no legal right to electricity customers in unincorporated county – Boulder Daily Camera.

Which to no one’s surprise Boulder disputes…

Carr (boulder city attorney – Ed) responded that Xcel is misinterpreting the law, and Boulder believes the state constitution clearly gives it the authority to acquire property outside its boundaries and operate utilities there. Boulder already serves water and sewer customers in the unincorporated county.

The state constitution says that a home rule city “shall have the power, within or without its territorial limits, to construct, condemn and purchase, purchase, acquire, lease, add to, maintain, conduct, and operate water works, light plants, power plants, transportation systems, heating plants, and any other public utilities or works or ways.”

That’s quite a lot of power to give the City of Boulder mothership. Perhaps they should worry more about maintaining their roads and clearing the streets. See the words “Transportation systems”?

Not to mention that at least the City of Boulder residents voted, barely, to proceed down the municipalization path. The 5000+ county residents apparently get no say in the matter and get to “come along for the ride” whether they like it or not. What’s not to like about that? Have the county commissioners been speaking up about this?

Xcel’s point is…

In a letter to Carr, Xcel officials said that under Colorado law, geographic areas outside the incorporated city limits are subject to the jurisdiction of the Colorado Public Utilities Commission.

“The CPUC has already granted Public Service the right to serve the areas outside the City of Boulder that the City contemplates serving in its February 26 report,” the letter said. “Public Service will not relinquish its right to serve these customers.”

The City of Boulder’s screw job of the affected County residents contineus. Go get’m Xcel.

Margaret Thatcher On The Euro

Margaret Thatcher Was Freakishly Correct About Why The Euro Would Be Such A Big Disaster

Basically, she outlined the problems with the euro perfectly, that Germany would chafe at the inevitable need for greater inflation, and that the poorer countries would inevitably be uncompetitive and need bailouts that would not easily be forthcoming.

Business Insider concludes…

It’s one thing to be kind of generically anti-Euro, which a lot of people in  England have been.

It’s another thing to absolutely nail why the euro would be such a  disaster.

Nothing to see here, move along. Oh, and the US debt doesn’t matter either.

So describes Boulder

Reynolds Second Law: “A good general rule is that the more a government wants to run its citizens’ lives, the worse job it will do at the most basic tasks of government.”

Think Boulder County roads and land use regulations. For the City think roads, snow removal and municipalized power.

Brune Brown: Shame and Vulnerability

This is her 2nd TED presentation:

Some favorite passages:

Regarding vulnerability and courage…

Now let me ask you this question: This past week at TED,how many of you, when you saw vulnerability up here, thought it was pure courage? Vulnerability is not weakness. I define vulnerability as emotional risk, exposure, uncertainty. It fuels our daily lives. And I’ve come to the belief –this is my 12th year doing this research —that vulnerability is our most accurate measurement of courage –to be vulnerable, to let ourselves be seen,to be honest.

On failure and success…

You know what the big secret about TED is? I can’t wait to tell people this.I guess I’m doing it right now.(Laughter) This is like the failure conference. No, it is.(Applause) You know why this place is amazing? Because very few people here are afraid to fail. And no one who gets on the stage, so far that I’ve seen, has not failed. I’ve failed miserably, many times.I don’t think the world understands that because of shame.

The difference between shame and guilt…

There’s a huge difference between shame and guilt. And here’s what you need to know. Shame is highly, highly correlated with addiction, depression, violence, aggression, bullying, suicide, eating disorders. And here’s what you even need to know more. Guilt, inversely correlated with those things. The ability to hold something we’ve done or failed to do up against who we want to be is incredibly adaptive. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s adaptive

Men and shame (yes she addresses women and shame and it’s much more complex), you’ll have to watch the above video or read the transcript…

For men, shame is not a bunch of competing, conflicting expectations. Shame is one, do not be perceived as what?Weak. I did not interview men for the first four years of my study. And it wasn’t until a man looked at me one day after a book signing, said, “I love what you have to say about shame, I’m curious why you didn’t mention men.” And I said, “I don’t study men.” And he said, “That’s convenient.”(Laughter) And I said, “Why?”And he said, “Because you say to reach out, tell our story,  be vulnerable. But you see those books you just signed for my wife and my three daughters? “I said, “Yeah.” “They’d rather me die on top of my white horse than watch me fall down. When we reach out and be vulnerable we get the shit beat out of us. And don’t tell me it’s from the guys and the coaches and the dads, because the women in my life are harder on me than anyone else.”

Watch the video.

Is there any bottom to how low progressives will sink

Andrew Marcus writing at Gateway Pundit asks:

Is there any bottom to how low Progressives will sink in order to strip Americans of their civil rights? It seems each day there’s another story about a Democrat spouting off complete non-sense about guns, with comments ranging from the absurd to the patently offensive.

His example:

Robin Kelly, candidate in the IL-02 congressional election, claimed Thursday evening that victims of 2012′s Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting failed to “pull out their guns to kill the gentleman that did all the damage that he did.” (video at above link)

I guess any means to the “politically correct end”. Pathetically stoopid. The anti-gun progressives must be buying stoopid pills in the same quantity as the DHS is buying bullets.

“And these people make laws for the rest of us”

Michael Walsh: Low Capacity Lawmaking

Why give Diana DeGette a break, I don’t see that she deserves one, being that gun control legislation is her “signature issue”.

To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, you need a heart of stone not to burst out laughing at her — and gun control is Ms. DeGette’s “signature issue.”

Michale Walsh’s prescription for Representative Degette’s stoopidity…

The NRA or some kind soul should take the lady out to the gun range, start her off with a .22, and then maybe she can see how these mysterious high-magazine clips — which also baffle the ace reporters of the mainstream media – actually work. Turns out you don’t have to throw them away after all; you can recycle! Who knew?

Well Boulderite’s should like the recycling aspect?
