More power Scotty

The rest of the world knows it, but special interest groups ignore the facts.

While American oil consumption has grown only 15% since 1973, electricity use has shot up 115%. Right now the U.S. has 760 gigawatts of power to meet consumption. We will need 135 gigawatts of new capacity over the next decade to keep the lights on, but right now only 57 gigawatts of power are planned. No matter what Barack Obama and Al Gore tell you, alternative energy sources cannot meet demand. Solar is still only one-tenth as efficient as the cheapest fossil fuels. Today 97% of our electricity comes from fossil fuels, nuclear and hydro power. Wind provides 1% and solar .01%.

The rest of the world knows that green sources of energy are inadequate to keep their people out of poverty. That is why around the world, from Europe to South America to Asia, countries are building coal and nuclear power plants at a dizzying pace while also drilling for oil wherever they can find it. Meanwhile, the United States, crippled by an out-of-control environmental movement, is refusing to develop needed energy sources.

The Messiah…

This McCain video nails it…

It will be entertaining to watch over the next few months as the Daily Camera squirms to not be an Obama groupie. Especially since they are Obama groupies, intellectuals just like him.

I have one super fearless prediction, The Daily Camera will endorse Obama. You can take that one to the bank.

Also, what must it be like to be a conservative and work at the Camera.

Oh, and did you know

William Tate added up the numbers for Investors Business Daily. Journalists donate money to Democrats over Republicans by more than a 10 to 1 margin, and even that ratio understates the case:

What a surprise. NOT!

BS artist…

Obama that is.

Barack Obama has proved himself an extraordinarily cynical politician. He doesn’t believe in much, but he certainly believes in his own power to make voters believe whatever he says, even when what he says today contradicts what he said yesterday, and even when it constitutes a bald fiction, such as his claim that the Senate Banking Committee is “[his] committee.”

Some day it may begin to dawn on attentive observers that Obama represents a type that flourishes on many college campuses. The technical term that applies to Obama is b.s. artist. Obama is an overaged example of the phenomenon, but his skills in the art have brought him great success and he’s not giving it up now.

Jared Polis’s mugshot

Hey Jared,

I’m sick of seeing your mugshot everywhere, especially the Daily Camera website. Of course, that’s not surprising since hell would freeze over before I’d vote for you.

That said, I find myself forming two conclusions about you that seem like reasonable deductions:

1. You really really like to see yourself

and

2. The amount of dollars you’re spending lead me to question your fiscal responsibility and your lust for power.

Well, perhaps that’s three conclusions!??

Here’s to hoping you lose.

Boulder vagrants run amok

Boulder vagrants are busy harrassing movie-goers at Boulder’s outdoor cinema.

Perhaps the local citizenry should re-examine their philosophy of encouraging these temporary citizens to “hang out” in Boulder?

Transients have been trying to annoy the crowd at the 9 p.m. shows on Friday and Saturday nights, Riepe said.

“They wander in front of the screen and lay down by people and be loud and obnoxious,” Riepe said. “People worry about their safety.”

I predict it won’t be long until law abiding citizens discover that vagrants/transients have more rights than they do.

What’s a “Fair Share” of taxes anyway?

Published in yesterdays Wall Street Journal, referencing 2006 IRS data:

The article goes on to say…

Well, the latest IRS data have arrived on who paid what share of income taxes in 2006, and it’s going to be hard for the rich to pay any more than they already do. The data show that the 2003 Bush tax cuts caused what may be the biggest increase in tax payments by the rich in American history.

The tax code is fairly regressive as is…

Aha, we are told: The rich paid more taxes because they made a greater share of the money. That is true. The top 1% earned 22% of all reported income. But they also paid a share of taxes not far from double their share of income. In other words, the tax code is already steeply progressive.

So where do Obama and his fellow liberals think all this money is going to come from?

Reaching the obvious conclusion…

The way to soak the rich is with low tax rates, and last week’s IRS data provide more powerful validation of that proposition.

So perhaps the rich should vote for Obama. Although there tax rates will go up, their efforts to avoid the tax will go up even more.

ANWAR, lions and tigers and bears Oh My!

Another typical don’t drill in ANWAR column in the Denver Post from yesterday. Here’s a typical liberal end of the world as we know it conclusion…

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is an iconic gesture of hope. It is the hope of all those who worked for its protection over the last century, and a hope that comes “from the eyes of the future looking back,” praying that we act with restraint in the trying days that have come with this century. As a nation, we are neither so poor that we need to sacrifice such a treasure, nor so rich that we can afford to do so. While a lone man in Washington and his party leaders may clamor for its exploitation, the mighty migration of the 100,000-strong porcupine caribou herd has made its way to its summering grounds on the coastal plain, the biological heart of the refuge.

After ANWAR is developed I bet the 100,000 (or more) storng porcupine caribou herd will be doing just fine.

Warning, Oil shale developent regulations on the way

Ed Quillen of the Denver Post, beware, one of your worst nightmares is about to come true. Of course I’m sure your friends, the enviro-wacko’s, can delay it until the lights go off.

The U.S. Interior Department said on Monday it will propose regulations on Tuesday to establish a commercial oil shale program that could result in up to 800 million barrels of recoverable oil on public lands in western United States.

The bad new for Ed is…

Congress temporarily blocked oil shale development in the Midwest due to concerns from environmentalists that oil shale production consumes large amounts of water and power, both of which are scarce in the West.

And yes, those ARE legitimate issues.

No way this guy lives in Boulder

From the letters to the editors blog of the Boulder Daily Camera…

Don Lloyd: Oil independence: Not using our own resources is shortsighted

Now I’ve seen Don’s letters before so I know he didn’t just parachute into Boulder, but he must realize that he lives in 25 square miles surrounded by reality? Heck, even the Gray Lady can figure that out!

Kudo’s Don, keep battling the good fight.

The Gray Lady museum display

Someday in the future there will be a special place in… err the museum for the display of the Gray Lady. Rick Moran of Pajama’s media creates this likely scenario

The inscription on the shiny bronze plate below the exhibit might read:

Thought of as the “newspaper of record” for more than 100 years, the Times eventually succumbed to disappearing ad revenue, a catastrophic decline in circulation, and the consequences of a perpetual, unrelenting, obvious and sickening bias exhibited against its political enemies.

Scott Rasmussen has been polling the attitudes of voters toward the news media and has uncovered the not-so-startling statistic that 50% of independent voters believe that reporters favor Barack Obama and are trying to help him win. Only 14% believe that they are assisting John McCain. With half the country able to see through the gushing idolatry of the press and their shameless promotion of Obama’s candidacy, where does that leave journalistic standards like objectivity and fairness?

Newspapers, we are told, should not strive for something as elusive as a will-o-the-wisp objectivity in their reporting. Whether that’s true or not we will never know because no major paper has ever risen to the challenge and tried it.

I would call that inscription an obituary and the present editors of the Gray Lady are quickening the time when that will be written. Beware Gray Lady, the future will arrive sooner than you think!

Depressing news

From the Fox news latest news section. Sure is depressing. If it gets you down, I suggest not reading it.

I look out the window and the world doesn’t seem like that bad of a place.

All the news that fits our thinking we print

The New York Times refuses to print John McCain’s submission to their op-ed page. The Times op-ed editor certainly likes to exercise his power. Here’s his suggested step by step approach…

“It would be terrific to have an article from Senator McCain that mirrors Senator Obama’s piece. To that end, the article would have to articulate, in concrete terms, how Senator McCain defines victory in Iraq. It would also have to lay out a clear plan for achieving victory — with troops levels, timetables and measures for compelling the Iraqis to cooperate. And it would need to describe the Senator’s Afghanistan strategy, spelling out how it meshes with his Iraq plan,” Shipley wrote.

The absolute arrogance boggles the imagination. I hope Shipley knows his audience or the blowback may be rather hot. Of course, one wonders, is this really about McCain or is it more about the Times? With the Times shrinking circulation and advertising revenue, it’s certainly legitimate to question their motives.

Hat tip to Fox commentor Tom Walsh for the headline of this post.

Ed Quillen takes on Newt

Ed Quillen of the Rocky Mountain News isn’t much on drilling for oil or . He reaches his oversimplified conclusion with great delight…

The clear implication is that all you have to do is simply “drill” in oil-shale country and the oil will flow to the refineries and the gas pumps, when in reality there’s much more to it than mere drilling. The kerogen has to be extracted from the surrounding rock, liquefied and processed before it can be refined.

In other words, with “Drill here, drill now, pay less,” Gingrich has given us one of those “sound bites and commercials so short they can’t communicate anything complex.”

Of course Ed has certainly viewed right into mostly empty Republican mind. Perhas if Ed had a little more respect for the opinions of those on the other side

A little presumptuous

President George Bush responding to a persistant reporter looking for guidance from the White house on energy conservation…

“I think people ought to conserve and be wise about how they use gasoline and energy … and there’s some easy steps people can take. You know, if they’re not in their home, they don’t keep their air-conditioning running,” Bush said, adding that “it’s a little presumptuous on my part to dictate to consumers how they live their lives.”

The Boulder city and county governments could learn from this attitude. Instead I have 3 trash cans.

Hat-tip to Darren.

Global Warming: Keep piling on

Powerline reports a global warming (caused by CO2) turncoat from the land down under.

But since 1999 new evidence has seriously weakened the case that carbon emissions are the main cause of global warming, and by 2007 the evidence was pretty conclusive that carbon played only a minor role and was not the main cause of the recent global warming. As Lord Keynes famously said, “When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?”

Of course, here in camelot, almost every decision of our governing bodies includes references to global warming.

British Open fairy tale over for Greg Norman

It’s a shame but a great showing nonetheless. Greg had a final round 77 and ended up tied for 3rd. Hope we get to see him play a little more after this excellent showing and his very recent marriage to Chris Evert. I had the privlege of seeing Greg win The Memorial golf tournament in Columbus, OH many years ago.

Boulder Governance

Darren gives Boulderites a peak into government programs headed for Boulder. Heck, some of it’s probably already here. I really like the justification of Daniel Webster for the “good intentions” of goverment:

Good intentions will always be pleaded for every assumption of authority. It is hardly too strong to say that the Constitution was made to guard the people against the dangers of good intentions. There are men in all ages who mean to govern well, but they mean to govern. They promise to be good masters, but they mean to be masters.
