Climate impact center shut down

Oh my, the NCAR climate impact center was shut down with little warning. I say hooray! Perhaps another government organization can take up funding?

“It’s clear that social science is not seen as a core value of the organization,” Glantz said Thursday.

That’s a good thing. Judging by the article comments, I’m in a distinct minority.

I’m breathlessly waiting the Daily Camera’s editorials or guest editorials on this subject. Since the DC as an organization has drank all the global warming kook-aid they can find, I have no doubt they will inform us the world as we know it is ending.

John Edwards and the Daily Camera

Edwards has been a “no show” in the Daily Camera until he publically admitted to his extramarital affair. Now I realize the Camera is a local paper, but if this was a Republican it simply would not have been ignored.

From a comment on an Instapundit poll on this matter…

From the comments: “If your stock broker withheld info re Enron from you, would you still use him? And yet, people still go to information brokers like the NYTs and CNN for their news…”

Hey, that’s why I stopped paying for the Daily Camera years ago.

No knock raid (II)

Instapundit weighs in and has this general conclusion…

We need federal civil rights legislation stripping officials of immunity in cases like this. Maybe now that they’re raiding politicians’ houses, we’ll see some action

.
One can only hope. The response from the reponsible law enforcement department has been non-existant as far as I can tell. Who DO they work for?

Joanne Leonard

She “is” and hopefully soon to be “was” the Director of Accountability for the state of Georgia department of education. Find out about her expectations of students over at Joanne Jacobs web site. Her definition of “adequate education” is pathetic to put it nicely.

No knock raid

Well they got their man but two problems. The mayor really wasn’t their man and they didn’t have a no knock warrant. Instapundit is usually all over the abuse of police power, but I’ve been on vacation and haven’t kept up. Of course, no one can tell the story better than Rachel.

9/7, 22:40 Mountain time…

Update: More complete story and of course no apology forthcoming…

Yet neither county Police Chief Melvin C. High nor Sheriff Michael A. Jackson have apologized to him, his wife or her mother, Georgia Porter, for the raid that traumatized the family and killed their black Labrador retrievers, Payton and Chase.

Joel Osteen’s spoil brat wife “acted like a diva”

Why or why does this not surprise me?

Continental Airlines flight attendant Maria Johnson testified that Victoria Osteen grew increasingly agitated and pushed her co-worker Sharon Brown, though the flight attendants had remained professional and reassured her a crew had been called to clean the spill, which was about the size of a 50-cent piece.

“She was demanding that attention be given to her immediately,” Johnson said. She added that Victoria Osteen kept saying: “This is ridiculous. I’m a first-class passenger.”

The reason someone acts like that is they think they’re better than everybody else. Perhaps Victoria should read listen to her husband? It sure doesn’t seem like she was practicing Christian values.

On the other hand, suing for 10% of her net worth does seem a little like a money grab.

Update: Rachel Lucas has a totally different take on the flight attendent activities. She can’t understand what hemorroids have to do with it. Gotta say she has a point.

Panel recommends retention of Judge James C. Klein

“Honorable” Judge James C. Klein received a rating of 3.38 out of 4.0, ranking him 73rd of 89 judges reviewed by the Colorado Commissions on Judicial Performance.

“Disagreement with the result should not be expressed as unhappiness with Judge Klein’s performance,” the commission wrote. They voted unanimously to retain him.

Excuse me, yes it should. I have been out to the site and I don’t know what planet Judge Klein is from but he has ruled incorrectly. I don’t need any panel of his peers to tell me how to vote. Judge Klein, start looking for a new job. I’m sure you can get one with the law firm that that Dick and Edie used.

Further commenting on Judge Klein…

Boulder District Judge James C. Klein, appointed in 2005, found himself at the center of a Boulder County adverse property possession case this year. It garnered him plenty of public criticism, but the commission report asserts that it was one case of more than 1,000 the judge handled in his three years on the bench. He received high marks overall.

Well, there have been other controversial cases that Judge Klein is open to criticism for…

Monday’s sentencing of a Louisville woman to 20 years of intensive supervised probation — but no prison time — for having sex with an underage boy once again raises the question of whether female and male sex offenders get equal treatment under the law.

City of Boulder: Poor losers

No surprise, they lost the case against Thunderbird Burgers staying open until 2am and serving beer so now they’re acting like little children.

But while Thunderbird Burgers won the right to keep serving booze past 11 p.m., the city may soon try to force the restaurant — and others that try to open in residential neighborhoods — to close their doors entirely at 11 p.m.

The Niwot based Left Hand Courier had an article about local resident Dwight Wederquist, who interestingly enough teaches conflict resolution.

After his career in public education, Wederquist taught classes in conflict management, emphasizing the premise that when people lose power, they lose respect and when they feel powerless, they lash out. He started his own company offering private conflict management and personnel mediation.

Indeed. (bold and italics are mine)

Boulder, China and Tibet

What a surprise, one of the first Olympic protests in China involves a dude from Boulder.

A Boulder man is among four activists detained by Chinese authorities after unfurling Tibetan flags and banners, then staging a protest outside of Olympic Stadium on Wednesday.

Phill Bartell, 34, a practicing Buddhist who owns Rising Tide Tattoo shop on Pearl Street, took part in the demonstration that called for an end of Chinese occupation of Tibet — two days before the Olympics opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at the stadium in Beijing. The current whereabouts of the activists are unknown, according to Students for a Free Tibet, the group that helped organize the demonstration.

The Dalai Lama appears to support the Olympics.

Getting yourself arrested and attempting to embarrass China is not going to help the Tibet situation one iota. It might improve Phill Bartell’s stature among Boulderites and protest groups but that’s about it.

Chavez ruins a country

Twenty-six more decrees, gotta love this guy.

President Hugo Chavez is aiming to set up neighborhood-based militias, move toward a socialist economy in Venezuela and increase state control over agriculture under a package of laws enacted by presidential decree.

Changes in areas from the military to small business loans were pushed through by the president in 26 laws released Monday in the official gazette. Chavez approved them on the final day of an 18-month period during which lawmakers had granted him special legislative powers.

Some of the new decrees…

Under one of the new laws, food retailers or distributors caught skirting government-imposed price controls or hoarding products will be punished with up to six years in prison.

Hey, at least San Francisco only wants to fine residents $1000 for messing up their recycling.

“The government believes it can advance toward a centralized, state-run economic system, but that’s going to cause more conflict with the business community,” said Jorge Botti, an economist who heads a Fedecamaras committee studying the impact of government policy on the private sector.

Hmmm, doesn’t sound too much different than Boulder?

Critics also raised concerns about a decree that creates a new National Bolivarian Militia — a branch of the military consisting of civilian volunteers who will help neighborhood-based “communal councils” establish “defense committees.”

Former defense minister Fernando Ochoa warned that neighborhood defense groups could closely resemble Cuba’s Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, which encourage citizens to watch for “counterrevolutionary” activities.

Not too different than Boulder County enforcing land use rules by complaint?

Jeff Callahan must not get out much

According to this article on Boulder “pay as you go throw”, in the past you had to pay the trash hauler for recycling…

“Currently, if you want to recycle in the unincorporated county, you actually have to ask the hauler to provide that service and pay extra for that service,” Callahan said. “This way it’s all three services; waste, recycling and organics collection are all bundled in the trash disposal cost.”

Hey Jeff, I’ve been recycling for the past 20 years and haven’t paid the trash hauler a single penny for the privilege! Now I pay for the privilege of recycling that I don’t use.

Fines for unsorted trash

It’s a short hop from San Francisco to Boulder, so I predict this proposal to inspect trash and associated fines will be floated by the City or County authorities in the near future.

Garbage collectors would inspect San Francisco residents’ trash to make sure pizza crusts aren’t mixed in with chip bags or wine bottles under a proposal by Mayor Gavin Newsom.

And if residents or businesses don’t separate the coffee grounds from the newspapers, they would face fines of up to $1,000 and eventually could have their garbage service stopped.

I’m sure Boulder County recycling czar (Division Manager with the Boulder County Resource Conservation Division) Jeff Callahan will be leading the way.

Me, I’m returning my recycling and composting carts in the next week or two. Alert liberal Boulderites, I’ve been recycling for 20 years and still do.

Boulder county trash

Why is it I would be much happier if the county had simply charged trash rates by volume but not a mandatory recycling fee? Probably because then the individual citizen could make a free will decision to either recycle, or pay more to have trash hauled away that should be recycled.

But no, the county has to mandate a recycling fee to “encourage” their citizens to recycle, something I’ve been doing for 20 years. Now I have to pay for something I don’t need, thank you very much.

I don’t need the arrogant Boulder County Commissioners taking care of me or their perverse socialist behaviour modification experiments. Frankly, it’s insulting.

Please vote for anyone but our present commissioners:

Greenspan Says Housing Prices Not Yet Near Bottom

Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said falling U.S. home prices are “nowhere near the bottom” and the resulting market turmoil isn’t showing signs of abating.

Read the article here. That said, REMEMBER this is the same idiot that called the bottom in interest rates by suggesting American’s get adjustable rate mortgages.

Unbiased media

With donations skewed like this…

What is truly remarkable about the list is that, discounting contributions to Paul and Rudy Giuliani, who was a favorite son for many folks in the media, the totals look like this: $315,533 to Democrats, $3,150 to Republicans (four individuals who donated to McCain).

Let me repeat: $315,533 to Democrats, $3,150 to Republicans — a ratio of 100-to-1. No bias there.

It takes a special type of arrogance to say the media isn’t biased in its reporting.

Poll shows McCain ahead of Obama

The Quinnipiac University poll shows in Colorado McCain leads Obama 46-44 percent. What is most entertaining is the reaction by the liberal commentors in the Daily Camera comments section and their typical lack of respect for people who don’t think like they do. For entertainment, follow the above link.

Tolerance and Boulder really don’t go well together.

More good news for Republicans is that Udall and Schaffer are now tied.
