Oracle is right, DC endorses County Commissioner power troika

Toor, Pearlman and Domenico for commissioners

The Boulder is a Stoopid Place oracle was correct. I only wish it took some actual brain power to predict the Daily Camera’s endorsements. They make the claim…

A summer survey in the county showed that almost three-fourths of voters are “somewhat” or “very” satisfied with county government. For all of the criticism our elected officials receive, that high approval rating is not at all at odds with what we find when talking with our neighbors around the county.

It will be interesting to see what percentage the Republicans and Libertarians capture of the total County Commissioner vote.

Also, it’s obvious that the Daily Camera editorial staff doesn’t consider that a significant challenge to the power troika exists, or they would have made this endorsement much sooner before more than 20% of the electorate had already voted.

Of the record 217,417 people registered to vote in Boulder County this year, about 24 percent had cast ballots by Friday night.

Randy Weinard takes on Judge Klein

Longmont citizen Randy Weinard took out an “illegal” ad in the Daily Camera against the re-election of Judge Klein. Apparently he unknowingly broke a few campaign finance laws to do it, which is unfortunate, but it doesn’t take anything away from his message.

Weinard joined hundreds of others at a boisterous rally last November to denounce McLean and Stevens for making the ownership claim on Don and Susie Kirlin’s neighboring lot.

“Property rights are pretty dear to our lives, and we get a judge who can’t figure that out and we need to get rid of him,” Weinard said.

Hmmm, that be would what was left of the Kirlin’s lot after Dick McLean and Edie Stevens, with the help of Judge Klein, legally stole 1/3 of their property.

Not to fear, we have the Boulder County Bar association riding to Judge Klein’s rescue…

The Boulder County Bar Association issued a statement Thursday defending Klein’s judicial integrity in the face of the advertisement’s denunciation of the judge.

With regard to the adverse-possession case, the organization said Klein “applied the facts of the case to the law as it existed at the time” and to have done otherwise “would have been to engage in judicial activism.”

Executive Director Christine Hylbert said the association is concerned that the ad, which used the catch-phrase, “You can’t pick your neighbors, but you can pick your judges,” doesn’t tell the full story about Klein’s decisions and qualifications.

“We hope we can put the facts out there and that a judge won’t be negatively affected by a few people who don’t understand what happened (in that case),” she said.

Christine Hylbert, I saw the facts with my own eyes and Judge Klein needs a new set of eyes. Not to mention knowing a few of the McLean/Stevens neighbors that claim that no path existed for all these years.

The circling the wagons by the legal profession would be laughable if it wasn’t so pathetic. The only way I can explain their actions is they have this undeniable urge to join the politicians, the President, Fannie and Freddie and the rest of the brilliant financial minds at the bottom of the reputation barrel.

Going forward, picking a jury is going to be more and more a terrifying experience for the attorneys and Judges in the courtroom. How many of the local population has lost respect for the courtroom process due to this case? I’m pretty sure none of you legal eagles will ever put me on a jury again!

For Randy to be investigated for not following campaign finance reform laws requires the filing of a complaint.

Weinard could face a fine of up to five times what he spent to buy the ad, said Secretary of State spokesman Richard Coolidge.

He said his office would begin an investigation into the advertisement if it receives a complaint about it. He said no complaint had been received by his office by the end of the day Thursday.

Of course, the only people who would file a complaint would be supporters of Judge Klein. I suspect either they will not file a complaint or will wait until after the election. Surely they must realize that every time his name comes up in the press, he’s just going to receive more of the same bad press and comments that he already has. My suggestion to Judge Klein supporters is to “lay low” and get out and vote.

Of course, I hope you’re in a minority.

The Messiah

I grabbed this from the Daily Camera comments section, but the commentor states it’s from the Washington Post. I’m too lazy to check it this morning, but the “shoe fits” so to speak…

“Mr. Obama’s temperament is unlike anything we’ve seen on the national stage in many years. He is deliberate but not indecisive; eloquent but a master of substance and detail; preternaturally confident but eager to hear opposing points of view. He has inspired millions of voters of diverse ages and races, no small thing in our often divided and cynical country. We think he is the right man for a perilous moment.”

(reprinted from: www.washingtonpost.com)

No wonder they call him the Messiah. He will probably win the election but when it’s all done and over I’ll be quite happy I didn’t drink whatever kool-aid that’s been going ’round.

Buy the Presidency

Or at least the appearance thereof.

Funny how the Dem’s are all quiet about money corrupting politics and campaign finance reform since “there guy” is ahead in the polls. The local liberal paper, that would be the Boulder Daily Camera has been extraordinarily silent on this subject. If the rolls were reversed it sure wouldn’t be that way.

MSM this IS your job

MSM and Daily Camera, since you have a hard time understanding your job, this column below from Orson Scott Card should help you remember, that is assuming you ever knew it in the first place. From Orson Scott Card vis Powerline

This housing crisis didn’t come out of nowhere. It was not a vague emanation of the evil Bush administration.

It was a direct result of the political decision, back in the late 1990s, to loosen the rules of lending so that home loans would be more accessible to poor people. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were authorized to approve risky loans. …

This was completely foreseeable and in fact many people did foresee it. One political party, in Congress and in the executive branch, tried repeatedly to tighten up the rules. The other party blocked every such attempt and tried to loosen them.

Furthermore, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were making political contributions to the very members of Congress who were allowing them to make irresponsible loans. (Though why quasi-federal agencies were allowed to do so baffles me. It’s as if the Pentagon were allowed to contribute to the political campaigns of Congressmen who support increasing their budget.)

Isn’t there a story here? Doesn’t journalism require that you who produce our daily paper tell the truth about who brought us to a position where the only way to keep confidence in our economy was a $700 billion bailout? Aren’t you supposed to follow the money and see which politicians were benefiting personally from the deregulation of mortgage lending?

I have no doubt that if these facts had pointed to the Republican Party or to John McCain as the guilty parties, you would be treating it as a vast scandal. “Housing-gate,” no doubt. Or “Fannie-gate.”

Instead, it was Senator Christopher Dodd and Congressman Barney Frank, both Democrats, who denied that there were any problems, who refused Bush administration requests to set up a regulatory agency to watch over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and who were still pushing for these agencies to go even further in promoting sub-prime mortgage loans almost up to the minute they failed. …

Yet when Nancy Pelosi accused the Bush administration and Republican deregulation of causing the crisis, you in the press did not hold her to account for her lie. Instead, you criticized Republicans who took offense at this lie and refused to vote for the bailout!

Your job, as journalists, is to tell the truth. That’s what you claim you do, when you accept people’s money to buy or subscribe to your paper.

But right now, you are consenting to or actively promoting a big fat lie — that the housing crisis should somehow be blamed on Bush, McCain, and the Republicans. You have trained the American people to blame everything bad — even bad weather — on Bush, and they are responding as you have taught them to.

If you had any personal honor, each reporter and editor would be insisting on telling the truth — even if it hurts the election chances of your favorite candidate

Young voters wake up…

Robert Samuelson via Betsy on young voters being taken advantage of by the older voters.

You’re being played for chumps. Barack Obama and John McCain want your votes, but they’re ignoring your interests. You face a heavily mortgaged future. You’ll pay Social Security and Medicare for aging baby boomers. The needed federal tax increase might total 50 percent over the next 25 years. Pension and health costs for state and local workers have doubtlessly been underestimated. There’s the expense of decaying infrastructure — roads, bridges, water pipes. All this will squeeze other crucial government services: education, defense, police.

Spoiled brats at school

Rachel Lucas on the just out of high school students who can’t adjust to the reality of college.

“I don’t understand it! I studied for four hours!!!! God, what does it take to get a passing grade?”

Oh, honey. You adorable little snowflake, try four solid days, 8 hours each. This isn’t high school, in case you haven’t noticed. I bet your Daddy noticed when he paid your tuition bill, and I bet he’ll be very excited when he sees your grades. What a sound investment you are.

Read the whole thing, it’s at least worth a chuckle or two, assuming you don’t have kids about to head off to college!

Boulder County Commissioners

Daily Camera, I’m voting tomorrow, please tell me how to vote for Boulder County Commissioner!

Judge James (“Jamie”) Klein

After sitting in the Daily Camera’s letter to the editor blog collecting dust for 13 days, the editors finally published James Liebermans letter in support of Honorable Judge James (Jamie)Klein. Apparently they were waiting for a letter taking the other side of the issue before publishing Lieberman’s pro “Jamie” letter. I wonder why they were so concerned, there were eight comments against Judge Klein in the comment section with none in support. Why are the DC editors so concerned that they give all appearances of treating Judge Klein fairly?

When it comes to national political coverage, fairness isn’t even on the editors radar screen.

Oh, and please vote NOT to retain Judge Klein. Thank you.

Also, while I’m at it, isn’t it refreshing that I don’t post comments at the Daily Camera web site linking back to my blog. That type of shameless self promotion sickens me. Some day I’ll get over it I suppose.

Vet the journalists

Thats what Rachel Lucas and the Ace of Spades suggest. It really doesn’t sound like a bad idea, afterall, Joe the Plumber simply asked a relevant question. What’s wrong with that, and what part of his background would make the question not relevant?

Rachel’s opinion of journalist looking into Joe’s background…

Assholes. I mean it. Anyone who has published anything shitty about this individual is an ASSHOLE. Joe Wurzelbacher has nothing to do with anything and yet you’re crucifying the guy instead of asking important, meaningful questions about the Democrat candidate for president. Worthless punks. You know it’s true. WORTHLESS.

Daily Camera: Obama for President

What a surprise. (<--- that's sarcasm Boulderites) Also, you can find all the Daily Camera endorsements here. They have not endorsed for county commissioner yet and it’s doubtful they will endorse on Monday since that’s the day the editorial staff usually takes off. With a Tuesday endorsement, they will miss influencing a day of voting. Could there possibly be turmoil regarding my predicted picks in the Daily Camera editorial offices? Hard to believe. Here’s hoping they make me look “stoopid”!

Are you a Joe?

Thanks Iowahawk.

Politicians — Sarah Palin, Bill Clinton, et al. — obviously have to put up with some rude, nasty shit, but it’s right there in the jobs description. Joe the Plumber is different. He was a guy tossing a football with his kid in the front yard of his $125,000 house when a politician picked him out as a prop for a 30 second newsbite for the cable news cameras. Joe simply had the temerity to speak truth (or, if you prefer, an uninformed opinion) to power, for which the politico-media axis apparently determined that he must be humiliated, harassed, smashed, destroyed. The viciousness and glee with which they set about the task ought to concern anyone who still cares about citizen participation, and freedom of speech, and all that old crap they taught in Civics class before politics turned into Narrative Deathrace 3000, and Web 2.0 turned into Berlin 1932.0.

(bold is mine)

The MSM/Obama’s lackies don’t even need a secret handshake. I’m proud I’ll never know what if feels like to be an Obama groupie. Once again, MSM DO YOUR JOB. If you believe your doing your job, then it’s time to find a different one.

NY Times and General Motors

What do they have in common? How about a horrible looking stock chart over the last 4 years. Admittedly, GM has done much worse the last few months but before that that GM’s stock was outperforming the Gray Lady’s stock. That’s pretty pathetic.

I believe almost everyone, even liberals, are aware of how poorly GM has been doing. Include the NY Times in your thoughts now.

MSM: Stop being a lapdog

Jennifer Rubin unloads on the MSM. Her commentary is so potent it’s hard to copy highlights so go read it…. NOW. Here’s her conclusion…

No one is suggesting these should be the only topics explored by the media, but the fact that none of them has been leaves one to conclude that the MSM has chosen sides. They are no longer covering the campaign, they are bolstering one side and making news judgments which invariably aid one side over the other. That, at the very least, deserves some cat calls.

MSM, if you want to remain relevant keep these words in mind from Jennifer as well…

If MSM wants to be treated as impartial arbiter, a “watchdog” and not a lapdog of one candidate, its members should consider some behavior modification.

Of course, one of the biggest lapdogs locally is the Boulder Daily Camera. It’s a close race between the paper remaining viable as a financial entity and being credible from an editorial point of view. Stepping back, it’s hard to imagine them going out of business but I for one wouldn’t shed a tear. I’m sure it would never occur to them that alienating the 35% of the voting population that’s Republican, not to mention Libertarians (and libertarians with a small ‘l’) living in the county might just have a very large impact on their profit margin. My wife and I stopped taking the DC 3 – 4 years ago and don’t plan to ever subscribe again.

Hat-tip to Instapundit.
