Priorities of Boulder County…

Maintaining county roads, especially in the subdivisions isn’t one of them. This letter to the editor from the April 25th edition of the Boulder Daily Camera from Robert Irving Armstrong explains how spending by the transportation department has diminished…

I recently learned that Boulder County has “changed its policies” by pursuing a special road tax levy, which would disproportionately target residents in unincorporated Boulder County to pay for the paving of roads in these areas. The county has been short-changing roads like this for years, while profligately increasing spending in other areas.

From a budget perspective over the past decade, Boulder County`s Road Fund has been reduced by 59 percent, diminishing from $2.6 million in 2000 to $1.1 million in 2010. However, social services expenditures have increased by over 200 percent during this same period, skyrocketing from $5.2 million in 2000 to over $16.4 million in 2010 and now stands at more than three times the level of expense that was allocated in 2000. (Overall, property tax revenue to the county has nearly doubled since 2000.) If the same proportion of the budget were allocated to roads in 2010 as was allocated in 2000 the total Road Fund would be $4.9 million this year.

This can be fixed with a 3 percent cut in non-Road Fund expenditures. That would enable the Road Fund to be quadrupled from its current amount, and help to begin to make up for years of neglect and avoid the issue of yet another property tax increase. This is not an attack on social priorities, but an appeal to sound fiscal stewardship. The alternative of continuing to allow deterioration of unincorporated county roads or a thinly veiled attempt to raise taxes (under the guise of a “policy change”) is simply not acceptable.

Currently, there are few checks and balances at the county level, other than citizens saying enough is enough. I encourage everyone who is concerned about government`s fiscal discipline to contact our County Commissioners about this issue at 303-441-3500.

Does anyone know of other counties that accept responsibity for road maintenance and then have redefined the meaning of the word maintenance?

To serve and protect…

I guess in Maryland it depends on the cause.

I hate to say this, and I will no doubt be attacked for it, but stories like this make one feel that the police are not on our side….In Maryland, 3 police officers police watched as 500 union thugs stormed private property in an act of intimidation and did nothing because, as the police official notes, there weren’t any “no trespassing” signs at the property.

In summary…

Flynn concludes with an explanation of the inherent interest of this story: “it is the small story that illuminates the overall narrative. Let’s dispense with all the semantics and timelines and legalese. Last week, 500 union thugs descended on a private home and terrorized a teenage boy. They violated someone’s most personal space, their home. And they attacked their most precious gift, their child. The police in two jurisdictions knew about this. They did nothing.”

Good news!

63% Favor Repeal of National Health Care Plan

Interesting tidbit…

Sixty-three percent (63%) of all voters expect the health care plan to increase the federal deficit. Just 12% expect the bill to push the deficit down, while 13% say it will have no impact.

Why do only 63% of voters believe it will increase the deficit?

Justice in Gaza

What a country that would be, eh?

Strikingly, this elicits no significant censure among the world’s democracies, the very ones that have often been so quick to rebuke Israel for supposed over-reaction to Gazan aggression. A rare, wan murmur of protest came from an unidentified “top UN human rights official,” who told AP that “fair trials…are almost impossible in Gaza.”

Hamdi Shakour, of Gaza’s harassed Palestinian Center for Human Rights, was quoted in AP as branding the executions “the worst violation of the right to life.”

Generally, however, Gaza’s notions of justice appear to have caused next-to-no offense in the enlightened West. This is consistent with the remarkable silence that has greeted the gradual imposition on Gaza of restrictions that echo aspects of Shari’a law.

(emphasis added – ed)

hmmm, I’m sure no offense taken in progressive Boulder either.

Boulder Barnes and Noble: An interesting conversation

added 5/27: Welcome to the Barnes & Noble employee(s) from NY that visit this post!

While taking my weekly stroll through Barnes and Noble today, I noticed that Ayn Rand’s novel “Atlas Shrugged” was on the high school required reading table. I struck up a conversation with an employee that basically went like this:

Me: “Do schools actually require reading of Atlas Shrugged for classroom work”

Employee: “Yes, some do”

Me: “Wow, there may be hope after all!”

Her: “Interesting, I think of it more as despair”

Me (as she walks away): “Well I’m a fish out of water around here.”

I would like to know what Boulder high schools are reading Atlas Shrugged!

Following Arizona’s lead

Other states are considering following Arizona’s lead on illegal immigration. Of course, it’s easy to introduce a bill, having he courage to actually enact and enforce, that’s another issue altogether.

The officials say states need to take matters into their own hands to tackle illegal immigration and in turn reduce the taxpayer cost associated with large undocumented populations in their hospitals, schools and prisons. They draw inspiration directly from the Arizona law, bucking the trend of local and state officials who have protested Arizona and called for boycotts against the state.

Interestingly the City of Boulder is busy protesting/boycotting Arizona while making life difficult for their own homeless population. Daily Camera editorial page editor Erika Stutzman commented on this in a recent editorial. Unfortunately I can’t find it on their web site and without re-reading it I’m not confident of her take on this apparent hypocrisy.

Stoopid Boulder cyclist alert

So easy to find in Boulder…

This is at the intersection of 28th and Kalmia. For the inquiring minds, the cyclist did NOT turn onto Kalmia but appeared to stay in the turn lane headed out of town.

edited 5/17 @ 17:39 – added the “NOT” in the final sentence.

Great minds think alike

That would be the Boulder and Los Angeles city councils on Arizona’s illegal immigration law. No doubt the LA city council is not even coming close to representing their voters. In Boulder it’s debatable but their getting a lot more pushback than they anticipated, no doubt about that. What’s it like to have such a “great mind” and find out you’re so out of touch with the commoners?

American flag offensive

More here and here. From the first link, here’s the response from the Superintendent…

When we were aware there may be additional concerns, I asked the administration to contact parents again to see if there is any expectations from prior contact that have not been met. The Principal did so, and indicated the parents were satisfied that the situation had been handled. They told the Principal they had twittered Fox and had indicated that the situation had been handled. Secondly, there are 3,000 students in the district, 250 employees, and parents that go with the students. Every day there are many interactions that occur between all these individuals. As I indicated, this event occurred several weeks ago, and in that time there would be literally thousands of events large and small between the people involved with the school. This was one small event that did not even come to the level of my office. There is an informal and formal process that is used to resolve issues. The school administration and the parents did not view this as significant enough to bring it to the Superintendent’s office. Thank you for allowing me to clarify this situation.

Amateur hour at Science magazine….

Climate science, the photo-shopped version.

What is wrong with this movement that the facts as they are are never good enough?

Hey… more on “facts” here.

It is a remarkable fact that warmists claim the right to keep their data secret and avoid any critical assessment of their work, while at the same time demanding that every country in the world fashion its energy policies on the basis of their alleged findings. No doubt there is a precedent, somewhere, for such arrogance. But I am not sure there is any precedent, anywhere, for governments being stupid enough to accede to such unreasonable demands.
