Wind industry losing jobs

Reuters: Obama’s ‘Green Collar’ Jobs Have Been a Bust

•Since 2009, the wind industry has lost 10,000 jobs, even as the energy capacity of wind farms has almost doubled. By contrast, the oil and gas industry have created 75,000 jobs since Mr. Obama took office.

•”A $500 million job-training program has so far helped fewer than 20,000 people find work, far short of its goal.” The program was so bad that “the Labor Department’s inspector general recommended last fall that the agency should return the $327 million that remained unspent.” They didn’t. And now, the department “remains far short of its goal of placing 80,000 workers into green jobs by 2013.”

•According to the Labor Department’s own figures, the push for so-called “green jobs” has been an abysmal failure. “By the end of 2011, some 16,092 participants had found new work in a “green” field, according to the Labor Department – roughly one-fifth of its target.”

The Boulder progressive elites will fix this and if not, they will take us down with them.

Helen Smith: Why don’t Men Get Prostate Exams?

Good question.

I must say the answer is pretty obvious! That said, I’ve gotten one every year since I turned 50. What I didn’t realize is that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) now recommends that healthy men should no longer receive prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests as part of routine cancer screening. (Follow above link).

This is news to me. Wonder why news like this isn’t as widely transmitted as the recommendation changes regarding mammograms. Just wonderin’, know what I mean?

Glenn Reynolds (Helen’s husband in the interest of full disclosure) comments:

It’s all about fairness. When women’s life expectancy is reduced to match men’s that’ll be fair. It’s Buffett-rule logic applied to health care. . .

Boulder Elite: Joe Kennedy is your friend

Joe Kennedy III calls for ending ‘cheap oil’

As gas prices continue to soar around the country, Joe Kennedy III, the Democratic candidate for Rep. Barney Frank’s seat, wrote an online letter to supporters calling for an end to “cheap oil.”

For municipalization of the City of Boulder’s power grid not to be a mistake, the Boulder Elite need more politicians that think like Joe Kennedy.

Don’t forget, the elite are all for T Boone Picken’s warning coming true.

Obesity and effect on healthcare costs

Daily Camera editorial page Erika Stutzman has been, and I assume still is, on a crusade regarding the deterimental effects of obesity.

Here’s a study from Cornell University she can use for ammuntion in her next editorial.

Obesity accounts for 21 percent of U.S. health care costs

“Historically we’ve been underestimating the benefit of preventing and reducing obesity,” said lead author John Cawley, professor of policy analysis and management in the College of Human Ecology and professor of economics. “Obesity raises the risk of cancer, stroke, heart attack and diabetes. For any type of surgery, there are complications with anesthesia, with healing [for the obese]. … Obesity raises the costs of treating almost any medical condition. It adds up very quickly.”

John Hinderaker:”This is not only flagrantly irresponsible, it is a violation of federal law.”

We’re talking Harry Reid and the budget.

The content of Conrad’s budget is almost an afterthought, but it may be even worse than President Obama’s. It includes zero spending cuts from the existing baseline and increases taxes by $2.6 trillion, $700 billion more than Obama’s budget. Under Conrad’s budget, the federal debt (granting all assumptions underlying the calculations) would increase by $7 trillion.

Is that a plan that the American people want to follow? I don’t think so, but Harry Reid’s latest maneuvering ensures that no Democratic Senator will have to vote on a budget before the election in November, and no Democrat will have to take responsibility for those unpalatable numbers other than Senator Conrad himself. The Democrats’ feckless inability to face fiscal reality, as manifested in the Senate’s failure to adopt a budget for three years and counting, is the clearest evidence of that party’s unfitness to lead the nation.

Good grief, if a Republican controlled Senate hadn’t produced a budget, our friendly progressives that run the Daily Camera editorial page would be mentioning that in the “snarky comment” section of almost every editorial produced. Instead, “Mum’s the word”.

Fatest nation on earth

Qatar named as the fattest nation on earth where HALF of all adults are obese

Here’s some ammunition for the Daily Camera’s next obesity editorial. It’s a very serious problem but I hope it’s at least a few weeks until we receive our next lecture. I prefer a Joplin, MO solution while Erika Stutzman prefers a Tuscaloosa, AL solution (“done right” of course).

Bolder Boulder May 28th! I’m so glad it’s a ‘dot com’ web address.

Sergey Brin: “Once you get too many rules, that will stifle innovation.”

No Sh*t Sergey!

Web freedom faces greatest threat ever, warns Google’s Sergey Brin

A similar lesson can be learned by examining how two cities, Joplin, MO and Tuscaloosa, AL are recovering from similar natural disasters (tornado).

In Joplin, eight of 10 affected businesses have reopened, according to the city’s Chamber of Commerce, while less than half in Tuscaloosa have even applied for building permits, according to city data we reviewed. Walgreens revived its Joplin store in what it calls a “record-setting” three months. In Tuscaloosa, a destroyed CVS still festers, undemolished. Large swaths of Tuscaloosa’s main commercial thoroughfares remain vacant lots, and several destroyed businesses have decided to reopen elsewhere, in neighboring Northport.

The reason for Joplin’s successes and Tuscaloosa’s shortcomings? In Tuscaloosa, officials sought to remake the urban landscape top-down, imposing a redevelopment plan on businesses. Joplin took a bottom-up approach, allowing businesses to take the lead in recovery.

Boulder citizens, city council and Erika Stutzman meet Tuscaloosa, AL. Can there be any doubt, any doubt at all, that this (Tuscaloosa) is the path the Boulder elites would choose?

Sounds like the citizen’s of Tuscaloosa could learn a little from the subtitle of this blog…

“So why do intelligent people consistently make such a hash of things? Because they are smart enough to talk themselves into anything. Ordinary mortals don’t engage in fancy mental gymnastics to reach conclusions that defy common sense. But intellectuals are particularly prone to this.”

Of course, there can be little doubt in the minds of Boulder elites that:

  1. They are intellectually superior to their counterparts in Tuscaloosa
  2. Because of reason #1, they can do it right.

Where’s the great god of porcelain, I feel it calling.

Transportation: Natural Gas Conversions

A summary of Rick Santelli’s reporting on converting a vehicle to natural gas. Key features:

‎80 miles per gallon equivalent w/natural gas
Where do you fill up? In your garage
Fuel cost? 66 cents per gallon equivalent
You can switch between Nat Gas and gasoline “on the fly” while your driving

I also saw interesting comments regarding taxation. At the moment there isn’t a vehicle to tax nat gas that is used as a transportation fuel. Same problem as with electric cars.

Ask a Manager: my boss is using my email account to impersonate me

Unbelievable.

My boss often lets me leave early. I thought he was being nice. But recently, he sent me a text about another girl being a lesbian and that he thinks she likes me. I went through my emails to find out what was going on, and I found out that my boss has been letting me leave early so that he can snoop through all of my emails and reply as me! Unnecessary thank-yous and you’re-welcome’s and other short responses, literally impersonating me. I found it completely innapropriate. He even impersonated me to her, although as far as I know, nothing innapropriate was said.

And corporations want your social network password? Do they really want this kind of liability?

Also, this employee needs to consult an attorney.

Yikes! Highlining/Slacklining

Highlining at Elephant Buttresses in Boulder Canyon

A group of people practiced highlining on the Elephant Buttresses, a climbing area about a half-mile up Boulder Canyon, on Thursday.

Slacklining or highlining — slacklining at great heights — are not approved uses in city open space.

T Boone Pickens warning to Boulder

“I’m in the wind business … I’ve lost my ass in the business.”

Host Joe Scarborough said laughing, “You’ve invested more in alternative energy than anybody else.”

“Exactly,” replied Pickens. “My issue is not political. I mean, this is an opportunity for America to advance, get on the back of cheap energy and recover your economy. It can be done, but we have no plan.”

Pickens continued, “Obama needs to go in, study it, look at it, and decide what an energy plan is, and then go forward with it. He needs to explain to his people, ‘Hey, we can get on everything green. We can get on everything renewable. Then the cost of power will go up ten times.’ So be careful when you start fooling with it. Know what you’re working with.”

Boulderites, be careful who you follow to the promised land. It might be awfully expensive. Keep in mind that too many on City Council and the Boulder Daily Camera editorial page, no cost is too high.
