Historically, the state was tropical swampland. We developed it into what it has been, and so it became a popular tourist and retirement destination, not to mention farmland. The thing is there’s a reason it was what it was. I listened to John Caldera recently read accounts from soldiers who were chasing after some indian tribe in FL in the late 19th century, saying the whole place was worthless, and they’d just assume leave it. He talked about the irony that many places on this planet that are beautiful to us are also dangerous, prone to natural disasters.

I’m not saying no one should live there, but if you’re not willing to put up with the natural environment, including the hurricanes, then you shouldn’t live there.
