Municipalization opponents hint at new ballot measure

Municipalization opponents hint at new ballot measure – Boulder Daily Camera.

What a great idea!

Sure looks like the potentially affected Boulder County residents will still be getting screwed…

Some county residents have also pressed for a vote because they didn’t get a say in the initial municipalization vote.

Suzanne Real, who lives in Palo Park, an unincorporated enclave in north Boulder, said she’s happy with her service from Xcel Energy and doesn’t trust the city. She said she chose to live in the county for a reason and wants a say in whether she has to accept service from a municipal utility.

Boulder has cited the state constitution for its authority to acquire property and provide utility service in unincorporated areas. Officials say they need two county substations that serve both city and county customers in order to have a more reliable energy utility.

Senior Assistant City Attorney Kathy Haddock said there is no way for county residents to vote on what the city should do. Such a vote would not be legally binding. (emphasis added – Ed)

Really. Five thousand people without a voice. Truly there is something wrong with that and something wrong with a City government that thinks like that. Don’t forget, the two ballot measures passed by very slim margins. Perhaps if City residents had understood that 5,000 of their County bretheran would not get a voice the vote would have flipped.
