Boulder County limits house size to 6000 sq ft

Boulder County is limiting house size to less than 6000 square feet unless you want to start playing the Transfer Development Rights game.

The new rules, which will go into effect Aug. 8, will force anyone who wants to build a house larger than 6,000 square feet — including basements, garages and storage areas — to purchase extra “development credits” from smaller houses or vacant lots to do so. The idea is to offset huge homes with more modest houses and open land.

The comments are interesting as is this letter to the editor (not published yet) by Ann Mygatt.

The idea that the “protesters” are missing is the County Commissioners are doing exactly what “the people” want. Unfortunately, the Commissioners, while each represent a district are all elected by an at large vote. This allows the City to dominate the voting.

The only way to beat back the property rights stealing commissioners is to take them to court. It’s a gamble that most aren’t willing, or can’t afford to take.
