Gun crime has plunged, but Americans think it’s up, says study – latimes.com.

 

The number of gun killings dropped 39% between 1993 and 2011, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reported in a separate report released Tuesday. Gun crimes that weren’t fatal fell by 69%. However, guns still remain the most common murder weapon in the United States, the report noted. Between 1993 and 2011, more than two out of three murders in the U.S. were carried out with guns, the Bureau of Justice Statistics found.

But….

Despite the remarkable drop in gun crime, only 12% of Americans surveyed said gun crime had declined compared with two decades ago, according to Pew, which surveyed more than 900 adults this spring. Twenty-six percent said it had stayed the same, and 56% thought it had increased.

Can’t wait to read about this in the local paper.

In Snob Zones, journalist Lisa Prevost describes the heights of entitlement to which property owners ascend when faced with the prospect of new development, especially multi-family dwellings in neighborhoods dominated by single-family homes. Prevost tours New England and finds an aging, declining populace bent on excluding outsiders. In town after town, affluent and working-class alike, residents line up to shout down new development no matter how modest.

Yea, I know it Boulder it’s different. Our enlightened government will make sure Camelot stays alive and well.

Kevin Hickey’s company outside Pittsburgh, Online Stores, sells everything from flags to English tea to construction equipment. It’s one of those do-everything retailers that essentially serves as an online wholesaler, competing with similar firms all over the world.

That means its profit margin is practically nonexistent. It has annual revenues of $30 million and might clear $400,000 in profit this year.

“We’ve got a huge, additional compliance nightmare that we’ve got to deal with,” Hickey said. “In fact, we’ll be charging more, so we’ll lose revenue and have higher costs.”

His greatest fear is being subject to another tax audit, like one he went through in 2006. State officials found that he should have been paying taxes on shipping fees — not just products — and it cost him $15,000 in back taxes and penalties.

Hickey is worried the new law would mean audits from California, Texas and elsewhere.

“It’s basically impossible to collect the sales tax correctly for all states. The chance of us collecting all sales tax correctly all the time is zero,” he said. (emphasis added)

All you need is a state auditor on a “Internet sales tax” power trip. Unfortunately that’s all too easy to imagine.

Diplomat: U.S. Special Forces told “you can’t go” to Benghazi during attacks – CBS News.

The deputy of slain U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens has told congressional investigators that a team of Special Forces prepared to fly from Tripoli to Benghazi during the Sept. 11, 2012 attacks was forbidden from doing so by U.S. Special Operations Command South Africa.

The account from Gregory Hicks is in stark contrast to assertions from the Obama administration, which insisted that nobody was ever told to stand down and that all available resources were utilized. Hicks gave private testimony to congressional investigators last month in advance of his upcoming appearance at a congressional hearing Wednesday.

As an added bonus, this didn’t come from Faux news or a conservative news outlet so perhaps Progressives will pay it some heed. Perhaps.

Colorado road money can now be used on transit projects – The Denver Post.

A new state law that quietly moved through this year’s legislature gives cities and counties unprecedented freedom to spend tax dollars on transportation projects other than roads and bridges.

For a county, and city for that matter, that almost every living (transportation) breath revolves around alternatives, expect more cost shifting away from road maintenance and special taxes for maintenance over the bare minimum and road repaving.

Acting Ambassador Hicks watched the Sunday shows and said he found this contradiction shocking. “The net impact of what has transpired is the spokesperson of the most powerful country in the world has basically said that the President of Libya is either a liar or doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” he accused. Hicks added, “My jaw hit the floor as I watched this…I’ve never been as embarrassed in my life, in my career as on that day.”

Nothing to see here, move along.

When there becomes something to see, which sounds like it will be pretty damn soon, ask yourself who has been doing all the heavy lifting on the investigation and who has been taking evasive action.

Albert Arnold Gore Jr., 65, is a lot of things to a lot of people. Among friends and fans, he’s the progressive Democrat who should have been president, visionary author and Internet prophet, the man who more than anyone drove climate change to the center of public consciousness.

Detractors see Gore as a limousine liberal, tiresome pedant and climate alarmist who lives a jet-setting, carbon-profligate lifestyle while preaching asceticism for everyone else.

His work and writing on global warming have earned him a share of a Nobel Prize as well as a South Park cartoon parody in which he tries to scare school kids to his beliefs with a fictitious global-warming surrogate monster known as ManBearPig.

Whatever you think of Gore, one thing is indisputable: leveraging his aura as a technology seer and his political and climate work connections, Gore has remade himself into a wealthy businessman, amassing a fortune that may exceed $200 million.

Put me solidly in the detractor column.

New evidence reveals the Obama administration’s version of the events that took place in Benghazi on September 11, 2012 was based on a tissue of lies.

Say it ain’t so. Of course, no reason to worry about the Obama administration Boulderites as the report was from untrustworth sources…

The revelations are part of a report published by the five Republican Committee chairmen that has been largely dismissed by a calculatingly indifferent media, despite the reality that it includes direct quotes from administration officials, along with footnotes indicating the times the messages were sent. (emphasis added)

This would be the calculatingly indifferent media that refuses to do their job.

For the time being, if a Boulderite wants to learn more you’ll have to venture to a conservative website or Faux news. Or you can wait until the New York Times decides it’s news. They finally figured out the Pigford scandel was news so perhaps they’ll warm up to the Benghazi coverup a little sooner. Color me skeptical since it points to the highest levels of the administration.

This comment stands out to me:

Everything is Global Warming! More tornadoes, fewer tornadoes; colder temps, warmer temps; more snow, less snow; too much rain, drought. When you belong to the Cult of Gullible Warming you free yourself from the confines of science and thought. All you have to do is repeat everything that al-Gore says. So much easier than thinking for yourself!!!!

As I stated in a facebook post to a friend, “Global warming, what doesn’t it do?”. My friend, who can be categorized fairly safely as an intelligent Boulder liberal, didn’t get it.

Number Six: NBC News Again Caught Selectively Editing Video.

I have a very simple question:

How can someone working for an organization with the word “News” in it ethically do this?

And the answer is contained in the article’s conclusion…

This is the sixth time in just a few years that NBC News has been caught red-handed manipulating audio or video to benefit whatever agenda the left happens to be pushing at the time. But as a result, we hear nary a peep from those currently running around with Kurtz’s head on pike.

The message is clear: if you’re pushing Obama’s agenda, there is no code of journalistic ethics.  (emphasis added)
