Are You Playing or Are You Dead? Altucher Confidential.
Kids only go “home” when adults tell them to.
“JAMES, GET HOME! IT’S FUCKING DARK!”
Or if they have to go to school. Or a family event. And later on a job. Or a government event (a holiday like “Father’s Day” or voting or something really serious). Or a rehab facility.
Gradually kids become adults. They become walking standardized tests with all the circles filled in.
It starts with that ancient mystery: why can you only use #2 pencils? It’s called #2 for a reason.
We learn to be pessimistic and cynical. We learn to hide our feelings. We learn to get scared for more than a moment.
We crowd out the toys and songs and games we were originally blessed to know. We forget about play. That wonderful bubbling feeling that pours danger and excitement on everything we can see.
Of course, there are exceptions. Rock stars. Sergey Brin, Scarlett Johanssen, etc. They get to still play when they want.
But you can be an exception also.
You don’t need money to create the world you live in. You play FIRST.
Sergey Brin started off poor as shit. He was a janitor in Stanford’s math department until he solved an ancient formula on the chalkboard.
Scarlett Johanssen lived in and sang in the orphanage until that rich bald guy adopted her.
But they played. And they kept playing. And the play made them special.
That’s how you unravel mystery, invention, WOW!, and all the things that create passion, enough money to provide, and whatever else your needs are.
You choose the world you live in. It’s an item on a menu. Right now you choose.
If you aren’t choosing, you’re excusing.
So ask yourself: “Are you playing or are you dead?”
Oh…, James’ post also mentions “keeping score”. That’s a hot button with me, but I’ll write about that another time.
Food for thought – A Drone Operator Speaks: “This Is What You Are Not Told” | Zero Hedge. No excerpt, click the link.
The dealership’s old policy didn’t comply with O-Care requirements so it was canceled. A new policy would have been too expensive for the company to sponsor, so instead they handed their employees $2,400 apiece and wished them luck on the exchanges. Will that pay for the premium hikes and the higher deductibles? Probably not (especially once the new ObamaCare excise tax on premiums takes effect), but that’s all the company says it can afford to give. The employees themselves can, of course, opt for cheaper plans on the exchange to keep their costs down, but that brings us to the other post-New-Year’s ObamaCare landmine — namely, shrinking provider networks. According to the Journal, some doctors have seen a huge crunch in December of patients scheduling tests and treatments before New Year’s because that doctor isn’t in the network for their new O-Care plan in January. I thought that was a problem limited to rural areas where there aren’t many doctors to begin with, but no, evidently this is systemic. And it doesn’t affect just the cheap “bronze” plans either:
Atkins: Obamacare fears grow in new year | Boston Herald.
The New Year will bring a set of new and far more potentially perilous obstacles for President Obama’s signature health care law. These looming problems could not only doom the troubled law if no solution is found, but they also will hover over 2014 midterm candidates as Democrats scramble to hold onto their Senate majority amid polls that show Obamacare to be their biggest problem.
These obstacles include:
Not to mention new restrictive networks that has many scrambling to get medical procedures before Obamacare beings.
But of course, inside the elite intellectual haven called Boulder, there are many that share Bob Kropfli’s view that the website is fixed, Obamacare will be an unqualified success, not to mention Republican’s will lose seats in Congress. Outside the 24 square miles surrounded by reality we are under no such delusion.
Inquiring minds want to know why Thousands Scramble to Get Medical Procedures Before Obamacare Begins.
Fearing that the will be unable to use the doctors and hospitals they want with their new plans, doctors are reporting a massive uptick in the number of patients calling for preventative procedures or moving up their planned surgeries to prevent a disaster once Obamacare measures strike.
The paper explains that while supporters of the Affordable Care Act may argue that procedures will continue to be available, the plans severely curb access to certain doctors and hospitals, preventing patients from getting the level of care they are used to at their usual price. In particular, insurers now using the Obamacare system have begun to exclude major academic institutions from their coverage, as these compete with cheaper community hospitals ostensibly providing the same service.
People who have figured this out aren’t getting their news from progressive sources such as the Boulder Daily Camera, that’s for sure.
Hawaii’s health insurance exchange is no paradise – CBS News.
Following a year-end enrollment surge, the Connector system reported 2,015 people signed up for the plan in time to for coverage beginning January 1. Hawaii has received $203.4 million in federal funds to operate the Connector. So far, that works out to nearly $100,745 in federal grant money per enrollee.
From the comments…
I’ve been waiting almost three months for Hawaii to verify that I don’t qualify for medicaid BEFORE i’m even allowed to SEE what the cost of the subsidized plans available might be. How long does it take to look up my tax returns?
No insurance for me as of Jan 1, still waiting.
I’m not the only one – this story has been vastly under-reported in this pro-obama state.
Talking about vastly undereporting Obamacare problems, the local Denver Post and Boulder Daily Camera fall into that category. Talk about finding the silver lining, when it comes to Obamacare, these guys are experts.
No one, no fucking one.
This excerpt certainly has Boulder in it’s sites…
Energy policy has become a boutique issue for the wealthy who push costly wind, solar and biofuels, subsidized mostly by the 53% of Americans who actually pay federal income taxes and are most pressed by the full costs of higher fuel, electricity and heating costs.
Boulderites will pay the price for their exercise in intellectual xxxx (fill in the blank) when it comes to green energy. It’s unfortunate parts of the Boulder County will be forced to pay the price for the arrogance of Boulder’s leadership. The citizens of the City proper deserve their rewards and will get no sympathy from me.

Edison Bulb Band Takes Full Effect In 2014 — Lights Out For Freedom – Investors.com.
Even government coercion cannot stop the advance of technology, and now American companies are leaking LED bulbs that don’t have the mercury problem, have a more natural light, and last longer.
They also cost more initially than an Edison bulb. Again, the decision to purchase them should be made by individual informed consumers, not as the result of government coercion.
Government does not have the right, even if it has the power, to decide what’s good for us.
It does not have the right to tell us to buy health insurance or what kind to buy, which cars to drive and what foods to eat.
Those decisions are best left to individual Americans educated on the risks and benefits but free to choose what’s best for them.
No kidding.
CFL’s are polluting garbage light bulbs. I have no doubt that LED’s will be vastly superior but they should be a voluntary purchase and compete against todays incandescent bulbs. That’s called competition and out of competition will come progress.

As city cycling grows, so does bike tax temptation
Early blasts of snow, ice and below-zero temperatures haven’t stopped a surprising number of Chicago cyclists from spinning through the slush this winter, thanks in part to a city so serious about accommodating them that it deploys mini-snow plows to clear bike lanes.
Wow, is Boulder being upstaged by Chicago?
The snow-clearing operation is just the latest attention city leaders have lavished on cycling, from a growing web of bike lanes to the nation’s second largest shared network of grab-and-go bicycles stationed all over town. But it also spotlights questions that have been raised here, a city wrestling with deep financial problems, and across the country.
I’m all for a bike tax and the funds can be used to pay for subdivision roads.
Krauthammer: ObamaCare’s Survival Will Require ‘A Huge Bailout of the Insurers’.
A huge government bailout of the insurers is waiting at the end of next year. And that’s an issue that Republicans ought to focus on right now. It’s the only way that ObamaCare will survive and it ought to be stopped before it happens. It ought to be — Congress ought to say no bailout, particularly because this isn’t a natural disaster, it’s a man-made disaster.”
A slow motion man-made disaster happening right in front of our eyes. Of course, it’s one thing to have a pair of working eyes, it’s another to actually “see”.
DEADLINE TOMORROW: Obamacare Enrollments Lag Millions Behind.
With less than 24 hours to go until the critical Obamacare enrollment deadline, all eyes are on the Obama administration to see whether Democratic claims of a massive “Obamacare sign-up surge” will materialize.
I haven’t heard any such claims, could be because I can’t stand to listen to them talk! The key questions are:
Will the Obama administration have 3,500,000 million people in Obamacare by tomorrow’s deadline? Moreover, will 1,166,666 of those people belong to the critical “young invincibles” demographic?
The answer given by Wynton Hall (journalist)…
Probably not.
Of course, this melodrama will continue to plan out, rule changes and all..
Obama officials claim that the real enrollment surge is likely to occur before the March 31 deadline when the individual mandate’s financial fines and penalties kick in. However, last week the Obama administration announced it will offer “hardship exemptions” for some of the millions of Americans who have lost their health insurance due to Obamacare, thus prompting debate over whether additional exemptions and delays may be forthcoming.
Bottom line: if by tomorrow the administration has not enrolled 3,500,000 people — with at least one third of those being 18-34-year-olds — Obama will find himself scrambling to hit 7,000,000 paying Obamacare customers by the end of March.
And my prediction: Ain’t gonna happen. No way, no how. No matter how many rule changes, made without appropriate authority, they invent.
Oregon Exchange Robocalls Applicants, Warns Them to Seek Coverage Elsewhere.
“If you haven’t heard from us by Dec. 23, it is unlikely your application will be processed for Jan. 1 insurance coverage,” the pre-recorded call from Cover Oregonsays. “If you want to be sure you have insurance coverage starting Jan. 1, you have other options.”
These options include going directly to an insurance agent or broker, but this route makes the applicant ineligible for tax credits and subsidies. Without these credits, many people will not be able to afford the new health insurance premiums.
Amateur hour is being way too kind. Total incompetence is much closer to the truth.
Thankfully for the Oregon exchange got assistance: Nine Oregon health insurers opt to renew cancelled individual policies. Isn’t it nice that all of these insurance companies that sold “junk policies” are willing to extend them to bail out their clients that the Oregon Exchange/Obamacare screwed over?
Obamacare empowers a few political elites, their operatives, and cronies to do whatever they want to the American people on the false promise of access to free, quality medical care, AKA tyranny-through-medicine. They write and rewrite the deceitfully-passed law for political expediency, power, and money; patients are an afterthought, an annoying impediment to their ultimate goal- socialized medicine, the keystone in the arch of Socialism. These Alinsky-inspired, Cloward-Piven trained, Marxist-admiring operatives will do anything to undermine the US Constitution and fundamentally transform the United States of America. These crooks will do anything to achieve their ends. They will lie, cheat, and steal. We cannot trust them. They think we are the problem and that there are too many of us.
We, the patients and doctors, are being scammed, used. I trusted my government until 2009; I was naïve. I do not trust my government now. Our current Federal government is the antithesis of all that composes American medicine and the sacred patient-doctor relationship.
Accordingly, I have fought Obamacare and will not comply with parts of it that I regard as unethical, unconstitutional, illegal, and ungodly. January 1, 2014, Obamacare plans will begin. I will not participate- on principle. I will care for my patients directly, free of government constraints, in accordance with the patient-doctor relationship and the Hippocratic Oath.
I’d sure like to find a doctor like this in the Boulder/Longmont or even Denver area. Although I would prefer to use my grandfathered insurance plan, I am open to paying cash. My other requirement is paper medical records. Any takers out there?
