Freezing Is the New Warming

Freezing Is the New Warming | RealClearPolitics.

Let’s jump to Robert Tracinski’s conclusion. Those of you outside of Boulder can read the article for the details (and it’s worth your time)….

Note that there is never any pause to acknowledge that maybe scientists should investigate the hypothesis that warming isn’t as big or inevitable as they have predicted. No, it’s on to the next ad hoc rationalization. That’s the basic pattern: an unproven theory reinforces itself in the face of contradictory evidence by generating additional unproven theories.
What interests me is how global warming is degrading, in plain sight, into a textbook case of pseudoscience—all while remaining an unassailable article of belief among those who think of themselves as pro-science.
One of the famous characteristics of pseudo-science is that it is “unfalsifiable.” That is, the theory is constructed in such a way that there is no evidence that could possibly refute it. The classic example is Freudian psychoanalysis, which tells you that you have an Oedipus Complex, and if you deny it, that’s just proof that you’re repressing it. Or take the creationist theory that God created the world to appear as if it was older than it really is. So if we find evidence that the dinosaurs lived 100 million years before the events of the Bible, that’s just because God planted the evidence there. Try refuting that one!
Or try refuting global warming. Temperatures have stopped warming for more than a decade? That’s just a temporary “pause” in the warming that we just know is going to come roaring back any day now. Antarctic ice is growing? That’s actually caused by the melting of ice, don’t you know. A vicious cold snap that sets record low temperatures? That’s just because the North Pole is actually warming. So if the winter is warm, that’s global warming, but if the winter is cold, that’s global warming, too. If sea ice is disappearing, that’s global warming, but if sea ice is increasing, that’s global warming.
Now we can see what they mean when the warmthers say that global warming is supported by an ironclad scientific consensus. The theory is so irrefutable that it’s unfalsifiable!
Which is to say that it has become a cognitive spaghetti bowl full of ad hoc rationalizations, rather than a genuine scientific hypothesis.

Counterpoint: Here’s a typical letter from the global warming true believers from the Boulder Daily Camera: We need to stop burning fossil fuels now

Opposed to the few remaining skeptics, the IPCC ‘s voice represents 1,089 reviewers from 52 countries who drew their conclusions by combing through 9,200 scientific publications on climate change. This is not just a handful of scientists, and they should not be cavalierly dismissed as “true believers.” Their conclusions are based not on belief but on hard science. Their report states with 95 percent certainty that humans have been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century.
Also, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists (ucsusa.org), there is now an overwhelming scientific consensus that global warming is happening and human beings are contributing to it. Their website includes a long list of scientific societies that support this statement.

Ahh that overwhelming consencus from scientists with obvious conflicts of interest. Perhaps it’s Cargo Cult science? And of course, letter writer Susan Secord pulls out the overused “it’s for the children” guilt trip…

For the sake of our children and future generations, it’s time to “stop fiddling while Rome is burning,” as the saying goes. Bottom line, we need to stop burning fossil fuels, and we need to convert to an economy based on renewable energy. There are many economists who say that the fastest way to get this done is through a national revenue-neutral carbon tax.

Taxing what you don’t want has worked. The problem is the unintended consequences that Susan Secord and other true believes of the Global Warming religion are too blind to see. NOT TO MENTION, there hasn’t been any global warming lately and it seems, just as mentioned in the original article, that there isn’t any weather phenomenon that can occur that doesn’t support global warming.

Psuedoscience plain and simple. Let’s get back to the Cargo Cult science, a term coined by Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman..

Feynman cautioned that to avoid becoming cargo cult scientists, researchers must avoid fooling themselves, be willing to question and doubt their own theories and their own results, and investigate possible flaws in a theory or an experiment. He recommended that researchers adopt an unusually high level of honesty which is rarely encountered in everyday life, and gives examples from advertising, politics, and behavioral psychology to illustrate the everyday dishonesty which should be unacceptable in science. Feynman cautions,

“We’ve learned from experience that the truth will come out. Other experimenters will repeat your experiment and find out whether you were wrong or right. Nature’s phenomena will agree or they’ll disagree with your theory. And, although you may gain some temporary fame and excitement, you will not gain a good reputation as a scientist if you haven’t tried to be very careful in this kind of work. And it’s this type of integrity, this kind of care not to fool yourself, that is missing to a large extent in much of the research in Cargo Cult Science.”

Integrity is missing in today’s science, although it’s a reflection of larger issues with our society in general.

Climate change, what can’t it do?

The trouble is that climate change has become what philosophers call a “non-falsifiable hypothesis.” Everything—Hurricane Sandy, warm winters, cold winters—is said to be proof of climate change.

via Climateers Caught in the Vortex | Power Line.

Steve Hayward goes on to suggest this exercise…

Try this parlor game out at a cocktail party next time you’re clinking ice-free glasses with a warmist: ask him to specify what climate or weather phenomenon would not be consistent with the general theory of climate change. And then step back and enjoy the fun. Being a climateer is almost as easy as being a Keynesian.

Sounds like a plan.

Growing up unvaccinated: News Boulderites CAN Use

Growing up unvaccinated: A healthy lifestyle couldn’t prevent many childhood illnesses.

As healthy as my lifestyle seemed, I contracted measles, mumps, rubella, a type of viral meningitis, scarlatina, whooping cough, yearly tonsillitis, and chickenpox. In my 20s I got precancerous HPV and spent six months of my life wondering how I was going to tell my two children under the age of 7 that Mummy might have cancer before it was safely removed.

So the anti-vaccine advocates’ fears of having the “natural immunity sterilized out of us” just doesn’t cut it for me. How could I, with my idyllic childhood and my amazing health food, get so freaking ill all the time?

My mother would have put most of my current “crunchy” friends to shame. She didn’t drink, she didn’t smoke, she didn’t do drugs, and we certainly weren’t allowed to watch whatever we wanted on telly or wear plastic shoes or any of that stuff. She lived alternative health. And you know what? I’m glad she gave us such a great diet. I’m glad that she cared about us in that way.

But it just didn’t stop me getting childhood illnesses.

My two vaccinated children, on the other hand, have rarely been ill, have had antibiotics maybe twice in their lives, if that. Not like their mum. I got many illnesses requiring treatment with antibiotics. I developed penicillin-resistant quinsy at age 21—you know, that old-fashioned disease that supposedly killed Queen Elizabeth I and that was almost wiped out through use of antibiotics.*

My kids have had no childhood illnesses other than chickenpox, which they both contracted while still breastfeeding. They, too, grew up on a healthy diet, homegrown organics, etc. I was not quite as strict as my mother, but they are both healthier than I have ever been.

I find myself wondering about the claim that complications from childhood illnesses are extremely rare but that “vaccine injuries” are rampant. If this is the case, I struggle to understand why I know far more people who have experienced complications from preventable childhood illnesses than I have ever met with complications from vaccines. I have friends who became deaf from measles. I have a partially sighted friend who contracted rubella in the womb. My ex got pneumonia from chickenpox. A friend’s brother died from meningitis.

The conclusion…

Those of you who have avoided childhood illnesses without vaccines are lucky. You couldn’t do it without us pro-vaxxers. Once the vaccination rates begin dropping, the drop in herd immunity will leave your children unprotected. The more people you convert to your anti-vax stance, the quicker that luck will run out.

More “good stuff” lies between the two excerpts. As they say, read the whole thing.

Doubtful this will change any granola munching Boulderites minds.

Guess no ones been better for Gun Sales than President Obama

Poll: Household Gun Ownership on Rise in U.S..

The latest Economist/YouGov poll shows that 39 percent of American households own guns, which represents a five percent increase over the number of gun owning households in 2012.

Interestingly but hardly surprising…

The poll found that 30 percent of gun owning households were Democrats, and 49 percent were Republicans.

“The frackers are basically saving America, and western civilization. No wonder so many people hate them.”

comments Intapundit regarding this article – Top Saudi lets the cat out of the bag.

Those who oppose fracking, seeking to stop it on the unproven assertion that it pollutes ground water or causes need to take a deep breath here. Saudi Arabia has been funding the poison of Wahhabi Islam’s spread throughout the world, building mosques, providing textbooks, and paying for imams to both gain converts and convert existing Muslims to the fundamentalist doctrines of the desert extremists: extreme subjugation of women, deep hatred of Jews, and jihad, peaceful when effective and violent whenever it appears advantageous.

Thanks to the miracle of fracking, we have in prospect the breaking of the Muslim world’s stranglehold on the world economy, making it possible for Western democracies to grow a spine and stand up to the oil-powered theocrats who want to extinguish other religions and impose their seventh century way of life on the globe.

Self-interest would dictate that the Saudis and other oil oligarchs would be wise to fund American anti-fracking groups, in order to remove this potential game-changer. Any group that opposes fracking should be asked to prove they have received no oil money.

Go fracking.

Green lightbulbs and crony capitalism

Lights Out For America’s Favorite Light Bulb – Reason.com.

The ban is crony capitalism in its most seductive form—when it’s disguised as green.

Major light bulb manufacturers supported the ban from the outset. The profit margin on old-style bulbs was pitifully low, and consumers just weren’t buying the higher-margin efficiency bulbs. New standards were needed, a lobbyist for the National Electrical Manufacturing Association told Congress in 2007, “in order to further educate consumers on the benefits of energy-efficient products.”

So Philips Electronics and other manufacturers joined with environmental groups to push for tighter lighting standards. As the New York Times Magazine explained in 2011, “Philips told its environmental allies it was well positioned to capitalize on the transition to new technologies and wanted to get ahead of an efficiency movement that was gaining momentum abroad and in states like California.” After much negotiation, a classic “bootleggers-and-Baptists” coalition was born. Industry and environmental groups agreed to endorse legislation to increase lighting efficiency by 25 to 30 percent.

Incandescent light bulbs, we’re told, are vastly inferior to the newfangled alternatives available today. The compact fluorescents lamps (CFLs), LEDs, and halogen bulbs are an apparent no-brainer: They last longer and convert much more of their energy into light rather than heat, all while cutting back on your energy bill. (So, of course, the government must stop you from ever making the mistake of choosing the traditional bulbs.)

Except many consumers aren’t buying it. The EPA estimates that, of the four billion light-bulb sockets in United States, more than three billion still hold incandescent bulbs. “By 2014, the traditional incandescent light bulbs… will be virtually obsolete,” claimed a 2007 press release from former Sen. Jeff Bingaman, the ban’s original sponsor. But according to the latest industry data, incandescents still make up nearly 65 percent of all U.S. light-bulb shipments.

Many consumers are turned off by the higher upfront costs of the alternatives. A single 40-watt LED bulb costs $7.50 or more, while a traditional incandescent bulb goes for around 40 cents. Some are finding that the CFLs don’t last nearly as long as their supporters claim—especially if they are switched on and off frequently, or if they are attached to a dimmer switch.

The list of complaints about the “efficient” bulbs goes on: They are often slow to respond, sensitive to high temperatures, and can cast a harsh and unattractive tone. CFLs also contain a small amount of mercury, which requires extensive and careful cleanup when a bulb breaks.

Gotta love it when government, big business and the green weenies conspire against the common folk who want to make their own decision about how to light their house.

Climate change execs: You’re Fired

Climate Change Groups Seek New Leadership as Green Movement Loses Momentum.

It is unclear exactly why many climate change organizations are installing new executives, but it appears they are following the professional sports paradigm: When a team loses more than it wins, you can’t fire all the players, but you can fire the coach.

In the last decade the environmentalist have peddled harsh laws to install climate change strategies. However, many of these laws don’t pass, and new regulations fail to get traction. With global warming at a standstill for most of the last two decades and – much to Al Gore’s chagrin – plenty of ice still on the polar caps, more green groups are firing their CEO’s.

Yet in Boulder, the push for green energy municipalization pushes forward: Boulder alerts Xcel it plans to acquire electric system in ‘significant’ step toward municipalization.

What happened to global warming?

University of Colorado Professor Steven Hayward, their Visiting Scholar in Conservative Thought and Policy, comments on global warming (or lack thereof).

Al gore made one of the biggest mistakes in environmental doom saying. he actually made near-term predictions. You want to make long-term predictions so when they don’t come true, nobody remembers you made them. But five years ago al gore said we might have an arctic ice-free location by now. And then there’s the sheer comedy of the ship getting stuck in the ice in antarctica, in what was an eco tourism stunt that back fired badly.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.: Snowy owl invasion of US extends to Florida – Environment – MiamiHerald.com

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.: Snowy owl invasion of US extends to Florida – Environment – MiamiHerald.com.

A snowy owl has made a rare appearance in Florida.

The Florida Times-Union reports that one of the Arctic birds has been spotted since last week in Little Talbot Island State Park. It’s only the third-ever sighting of a snowy owl confirmed in Florida.

Park services specialist Peter Maholland says bird watchers have been flocking to northeast Florida to catch a glimpse of the white bird.

Snowy Owls are familiar to children as Harry Potter’s pet. They are the largest North American owl, and they’re typically found in Canada and the Arctic.

Experts say snowy owls fly farther south when their population spikes or their food source becomes scarce. An invasion of snowy owls has been reported this winter across the Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

Doesn’t fit the narrative.

It wasn’t until he went to a carry-friendly jurisdiction that he understood the difference:

Detroit police chief: Want crime to drop? Start carrying « Hot Air.

It’s not the first time that Craig has endorsed carry permits. Two weeks ago, the Detroit News notes, he told a local radio show that responsibly armed citizens act as a deterrent, in a city that can clearly use one. Even though the murder rate has dropped, Detroit had as many homicides in 2013 as New York City, which has more than ten times its population. Chicago had only 29 more than Detroit despite having nearly four times the population. It’s worth noting that both New York City and Chicago have extraordinary restrictions on gun ownership, let alone carry permits, and Chicago routinely ranks among the worst American metropolitan areas for homicides and violent crime.
