… and you wonder why

I say that “Boulder is a Stoopid Place”. This article posted late today on the Daily Camera web site starts out:

CLINTON, N.Y. (AP) — A University of Colorado professor who compared the

victims of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center to Nazis has ignited

protests on a college campus where he’s been invited to speak.

His disrespect for Capitalism and free enterprise come through loud and clear…

In a treatise titled, “Some People Push Back,” written after the attacks,

Churchill asserted the 3,000 people killed at the World Trade Center worked for

“the mighty engine of profit” but chose to ignore their role.

“True enough, they were civilians of a sort,” he wrote. “But innocent?

Gimme a break.”

I simply don’t understand how working for a private company that wants to make a profit gets you the honor of being the target of a hijacked airplane. I’m not the least bit surprised this guy hangs out and infects students at the University of Colorado and it wouldn’t surprise me if he has a good sized cult following in Boulder.

Makes me sick.

Let Freedom Ring

Poor Al-Zarqawi, doesn’t want the light of freedom shining in Iraq as you can read in this New York Post article. The quote I like best is:

The speaker said democracy was based on un-Islamic beliefs and behaviors
such as freedom of religion, rule of the people, freedom of expression,
separation of religion and state, forming political parties and majority rule.

Bring on the sunlight.

More $$’s to the UN

The editors of the Boulder Daily Camera, in a pang of typical liberal guilt, want more US $$’s to go to the UN (read here, free registration necessary). The admirable goal is to cure/control the “silent tsunami”, malaria.

The UN is a corrupt, lethargic and arrogant organization. Their inability to admit to almost any element of corruption is ample evidence of their arrogance. You can read about their incompetence in handling the tsunami relief here and their general level of incompetence in these two books from world travler Jim Rogers.

The UN has a lot of bad tasting medicine to take before I’d give them any money. Chemotherapy comes to mind.

frustration

Well my post on Boulder County land use will have to wait another day. Twenty minutes of work just went down the drain and I don’t have the energy to start over. I’m learning but it’s slow going. I’ve got to make this blogging thing a little bit more spontaneous, but between learning the tools and trying to be “perfect” (yea, what a joke!) it’s slow going. I’m working on it!

Social Security

This is certainly a controversial topic and I have a lot of self-educating to do. A few items quickly come to mind, both pro and con:

1. I embrace the concept of “ownership” society so conceptually I am in favor of privatizing a portion of social security.

2. On the other hand, when I occasionally see some of the reality shows that take place on daytime TV, it causes me to question if these people could possibly manage their social security accounts.

3. Lot’s of the hysteria I hear could only be justified as true hysteria if more then 4% of the SS payroll tax was going to privatization. (this is confusing, the total payroll contribution is 12.5%, so the proposal is for slightly more than 30% of the combined contribution of both employer and employee).

4. Although investment options are not clear at this point, it’s probably safe to assume there will be broad based stock indices, some bond options and some type of cash/short term bond options. So once again contributions can be shielded from the dreaded equity markets and invested in bond indices or cash equivalents.

5. What I fear most from privatization is the unending whining from liberals when the equity markets decline for 2-3 years. History has demonstrated that politicians from both parties cannot control their spending habits. I’m sure after a year or two of declines in the equity markets they’ll be doing everything in their power to manipulate the market and get themselves re-elected.

The thought of liberal whining, combined with political gamemanship entering the stock market is enough to give this free market supporter at least a mild case of indigestion when considering social security privatization.

rude?

Today I stopped by the bank to make a deposit. On the few Saturday’s I’ve stopped in, they’ve had fresh donuts and coffee, and today was no exception. As I approached the entrance out walks this “guy” with three donuts in a napkin (and there easily could have been one in his other hand that he was eating). I’m sorry I just don’t get it. I noted how many donuts there were as I entered and they don’t stock the donuts for each person to take three! I wonder what went through his head when he grabed way over his “allotment”? Is there a “revenge motive” for excessive fee’s? Does he thinks he’s better then the rest of us or is it just pure thoughtlessness? Regardless, I color it rude.

Oh well, not going to change the world, but I feel better! Oh and I had ONE donut on my way out. 😉

Crichton Poppycock?

At the offices of the local Boulder Newspaper this apparently qualifies as a book review. The book is Michael Crichton’s latest science fiction book, “State of Fear”. Through the book Crichton takes aim at the global warming crowd using data from scientific studies and includes footnotes. The fact that someone could use scientific studies to question the global warming crowd throws the reviewer into a rant. Some favorite one liners are:

“Now, assuming you are not on the board of a major oil company and you are not

Ann Coulter, would you rush out to the nearest bookstore for your copy?”

… and after expressing dismay at Crichton’s thesis and documented evidence that is just so crazy we run into Ann Coulter again…

“Keeping in mind that you are still not Ann Coulter, does this sound like a “must-read”?”

I haven’t read the book and it isn’t even close to the top of my “must read” list. However, to think that a rant like this can make it into the major local newspaper was stunning to me! Color me naive I suppose.

For a more straightforward book review and to actually learn something about “State of Fear”, try here!

Obviously there’s room for discussion on Crichton’s footnotes, paid research, etc, and a book reviewer is supposed to have an opinion, just not be a raving lunatic.
