Pre-teen drinking…

On the other hand, the Boulder Daily Camera reports today:

One of every five high school students in the district said they consumed alcohol before age 13, according to the 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Survey given to random classrooms at the district’s 12 high schools in November.

That 20 percent of students — who said their pre-teen drinking was more than a few sips and wasn’t for religious purposes — is down slightly from two years ago.

I guess the fact that pre-teen drinking has declined slightly is great, but the absolute numbers ARE horrifying. The quesiton is what is the governments role in this problem and what is the parents role?

Do Beer Drinkers Vote?

Looks like we’re about to find out in California.

SACRAMENTO – Joe Six-pack will have to pay a lot more to get his buzz on if Assemblyman Jim Beall has his way.

The San Jose Democrat on Thursday proposed raising the beer tax by $1.80 per six-pack, or 30 cents per can or bottle. The current tax is 2 cents per can. That’s anincrease of about 1,500 percent.

Beall said the tax would generate $2 billion a year to fund health care services, crime prevention and programs to prevent underage drinking and addiction.

Thankfully…

But the freshman lawmaker will have to lift the legislative equivalent of a full keg of beer over his head to get his tax enacted. That’s because it would require a two-thirds vote in the Assembly and Senate – and then, because it’s a constitutional amendment, it would have to be approved by voters. Republicans say it’s a non-starter.

Professional Bow-maker

I think this is way cool…

Still, Paulu, now 45, says a career in bow-making never crossed his mind until after college.

Today, Paulu is one of three professional, full-time bow makers in Colorado and one of a few dozen across the country, most clustered on the coasts. Until the late ’80s, when Paulu graduated college, Colorado had no bow-makers.

How should the baby be raised?

I don’t know, but I’m sure the baby would be better off if “none of the above” was chosen.

If you’re debating over which gang a 4 year old should join, you have no business being parents.

Randy Pausch is lying on his bed, his head propped up by pillows, his hands interlocked on his chest. In his pressed khakis, red polo shirt and bare feet, he looks the stereotypical suburban dad, which he is.
And with his rosy cheeks and dark hair still wet from the shower, he also looks the picture of health, which he is not. He’s dying.

The Whipsaw Song

Ed Seykota is one of the traders written about in Jack Schwager “Market Wizards” book. He apparently enjoys bluegrass and is decent with the banjo. Ed and some of his trading friends put the Whipsaw Song up on You Tube. You can also get more information on Ed’s trading philosophy here.

Thanks to Michael Covel’s trend following newsletter for bring this to my attention. More information here.

Crushing dissent where?

The first time I read this, I saw the link as “Crushing Of Dissent in China”. I did a doubletake when I saw “Canada”.

The Canadian Human Rights Commission does seem to be having their own personal power trip.

$69,000 severance check

Graham Billingsly received a nice severance check from the County according to the Daily Camera. If it weren’t for the fact that the new boss is usually the same as the old boss, I’d say it’s a great bargain to make him go away forever.

Arrogance is too kind a word to describe Graham.

Last Lecture update

I was at the Longmont Borders today and noticed they didn’t have The Last Lecture. I overheard a phone call and it appears that either Borders didn’t order enough or the publisher didn’t anticipate the demand. It sounded more like the latter.

If that’s the case, if you see one and you want it, don’t wait, pounce on it.

Ghostwriter

I agree with Maoxian, Jerry Yang, CEO of Yahoo can’t get a ghostwriter soon enough. Of course, he probably won’t need one fairly soon. Maoxian critques portions of Jerry’s letter to Microsoft here.

Update on bicycle speed limit

In a letter to the editor, Casey Jones, the Director of the Parking and Transportation Division at the University provided some clarifcation to the 5 mph bicycle speed limit. He states…

The new 5 mph speed limit does not apply to every sidewalk on campus but only those designated as pedestrian safety zones. Pedestrian safety zones have been established to reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians, skateboarders and bicyclists along CU-Boulder’s sidewalks. Currently marked as “dismount zones,” pedestrian safety zones are portions of the CU-Boulder sidewalk system where bicycle riding, skateboarding and personal transportation devices are restricted. New signs will replace the “dismount zone” markings.

The 5 mph speed limit within pedestrian safety zones is in effect between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday except during class change periods. During class change periods, bicyclists, skateboarders and persons using personal transportation devices must dismount or not exceed 5 mph.

Seems like some common sense in action, although the 2nd paragraph still leaves me slightly confused.

Two Views on the Newspaper Business

Clay Evans had a recent editorial in the Daily Camera titled “No news will be bad news“, where he commented how newspapers will be missed when they’re gone. One of Evan’s main points is…

Traditional media offers something that Joe Blogger generally doesn’t: A system of accountability. That doesn’t mean newspapers always get it right, but there are, at least, some checks and balances. Fact checking and cranky, cigar-chomping editors are — were? — a good thing.

On the other side is the American Digest which authored an article today titled “More Good News: Seattle Times Axes 200“. One of the Digest’s main points is…

Of course, the real elephant drooling in the room of newspapers like the Seattle Times these days is “the forgotten reader.” These are the potential readers who, because of the unremitting liberal tone and slant of the Times in both the news hole and on the editorial page, loathe the Times and the whole sector of Seattle society it represents.

Now you may say, in a town as overwhelmingly liberal as Seattle, “Screw those troglodyte, Republican morons!” Well, you can say that but then you will, sooner or later, fire 200 of your employees. And that will be only the start.

I suspect both sides could learn something from the other. That said, it is way to easy to imagine the Daily Camera staff saying/thinking “Screw those troglodyte, Republican morons!” The Camera needs to start offering BOTH Hamburgers and Cheeseburgers if they want to stay in business (read the Digest article). Our family cancelled our subscription a few years back because we were tired of not only the slanted editorials, but the news reporting as well.

Brainwashing our children….

not to mention the Daily Camera editorial staff and most of the rest of the paper.

From the USA Today “The Weather Guys” blog…

William Gray, the well-known Colorado State University hurricane forecaster, routinely uses the annual National Hurricane Conference as a platform to bash global warming. In a statement to Florida Today, Gray argued that the scientific consensus on global warming is bogus — and “a mild form of McCarthyism has developed toward those scientists who do not agree” that mankind is in danger.

“We are also brainwashing our children on the warming topic. We have no better example than Al Gore’s alarmists and inaccurate movie which is being shown in our schools and being hawked by warming activists with little or no meteorological-climate background,” Gray wrote.
