You can’t make this stuff up

Geese maimed by plane in Hudson River.

David Krest lives a long way from Boulder but he knew where to send a moonbat letter like this one. I can’t even label this post as “Boulder is stoopid” since Paonia is so far away. Wonder if he’s a Boulder transplant?

Or perhaps he’s being sarcastic and I’m missing it?

Beam me up.

Power Troika

Eric Abramson from Nederland gets the shaft from the Boulder County Commissioners. Although I believe Eric was a little bit naive in believing he could put up a power generation windmill, it’s unfortunate the Commissioners are so worried about losing their power by granting a variance (or whatever would allow Eric to build) that they refuse to work with him.

As I’ve said before, this is exactly the type of government the citizens of the county want. Don’t ask me why, I don’t get it. There would have to be 1000’s of Eric Abramson type stories before the vote would start to sway.

Collins – Stewart downgrades Seagate

Well what a bunch of insightful “yahoos” work at Collins Stewart? They downgraded Seagate today… TODAY! Let’s take a look at the chart….

I don’t own any Seagate stock and don’t invest much in hi-tech anymore, but give me a break. Look at the chart. Where has Collins Stewart been for the last year? What a courageous call!

If you have money with Collins Stewart, or have any funds advised by idiots like this, I strongly advise you to move it elsewhere. Oh, and RUN don’t walk to do it.

Oh and you can read all about Collins Stewart and their “formiddable US footprint” here.

It’s not about the money!

Aspen eateries sue bomber’s estate.

“We’re not doing this for the money,” said Scott Brasington, a co-owner of Kenichi, which is spearheading the lawsuit against Blanning, who committed suicide on the side of the road early on New Year’s Day.

“We’re doing this to make a statement. . . . We feel it belongs to the restaurant workers who took a huge hit. It’s not just the restaurant owners – it’s the waiters, the waitresses, the bartenders, the guys in the kitchen.”

While 10 restaurants have joined in the lawsuit, Brasington said other restaurants are encouraged to join the effort.

Hey, James Blanning was a scumbag and he ruined New Years Eve for Aspen and their bars and restaurants. Get over it and move on. Me, if I were to eat in Aspen, I’d try and frequent a restaurant that’s moving forward, not living in the past. If it’s not about the $$’s, who are they trying to teach a lesson to? Is it for publicity? Help me, my simple mind is sooo confused.

Whole Foods, Wild Oats and the FTC

It sure seems to me that the FTC needs to “get over themselves” as they continue to try and gum up an already completed merger between Whole Foods and Wild Oats. It’s a very small stretch to reach the conclusion that the FTC personnel working on this case are a bunch of arrogant bureaucrats with law degrees and an ax to grind.

Admittedly, I don’t live on natural and organic food, but there sure seems to be a nice selection available at “mainstream” stores. Perhaps they don’t have the variety and cache of Whole Foods or Wild Oats but making the argument that a monopoly has been formed only gets weaker by the day, heck even by the hour.

Certainly the FTC has more important things to do? Please, oh please tell me there’s something more meaningful for the FTC bureaucrats to be doing?

“Sea Kittens”

PETA’s new name for fish is, you guessed it, “Sea Kittens“. I’m with 12 year old Chastity Haskins who says…

“I don’t see fish as sea kittens; I see them as food.”

You can’t make this stuff up. For you Boulderites, I’m talking about PETA, not Chastity.

Since I’ve been blogging on Seagate/disk drive companies, this doesn’t seem to out of place.

Seagate to lay off 800

This evening Seagate announed a 10% cut of their domestic workforce (~ 800 people). I must say I’m surprised by the small size of the RIF. I can only hope that the bulk of the downsizing is from the ranks of management.

That said, the prediction of an operating loss of 2 cents per share hardly seems like the end of the world considering the economic climate.

Bailout: Financial system working bassackwards

… according to Jim Rogers. When businesses fail the competent people are supposed to take over from the incompetent ones. Instead, the government is taking money from the competent people and giving to the incompetent people to continue running their businesses.

Top management shakeup at Seagate

Seagate CEO Bill Watkins will have a new job soon, as he relinquished the CEO job to Chariman Steve Luczo today.

Seagate said in a statement that Luczo would confer over the next week with Watkins, who’s a 12-year company veteran, “to determine what role, if any” he would have at the firm.

Doesn’t sound hopeful for ol Bill to me. Perhaps someone should send him the link to the Money Magazine article on being laid off at 50!

So how is the stock reacting to the shakeup?

It appears the market participants are not encouraged by this action, I tend to disagree, but what do I know?

I hope Seagate (or their Board of Directors) continues with this type of drastic action, which they have, as the article mentions that Seagate president Dave Wickersham is also being replaced by Luczo as well.

Laid off at 50

The January issue of Money Magazine has an article on handling layoffs for those 50 and older. They list the following web sites as places to find help…

bizstarters
Encore Careers
Five O’Clock Club
Gray Hair Management
Retired Brains
Retirementjobs.com
2 Young 2 Retire

The article includes other interesting items and factoids such as:

The older you are the higher your risk of being laid off
How to tell if your dismissal is discrimination
The odds you might have to take a pay cut

Seagate “hits”

I’ve noticed a lot of hits from Seagate folks in Minneapolis, San Francisco and a few from Colorado.

Having worked in the disk drive industry I realize it’s a tough industry and although I’m not particularly sympathetic with Seagate top management and politics I certainly can understand how the day to day workerbees are feeling. I wish you the best of luck and if you are one of the unlucky ones I wish you the best of luck in your job search or in starting a business of your own.

I did have lunch with someone from Seagate last week and they told me the data was Feb 14th (I think). I would NOT put much faith in that date, but obviously something will happen soon.

Wishing you best of luck.

Seagate layoffs imminent

The only surprise here is the length of time it took management to finalize the layoffs. One can only hope there is plenty of management included in the RIF.

Watkins notes that the company will announce a restructuring sometime this month which will likely result in a reduction in production capacity and significant layoffs. The company currently has about 50,000 employees worldwide; it’s not hard to imagine there will be thousands job cuts.

Editorial page changes at the Daily Camera

Erika Stutzman informs readers of editorial changes at the Daily Camera. Interestingly enough, Bob Greenlee is referred to as a “conservative Republican” while none of the other contributors are referred to as “ liberals or Democrats/Progressives”.

I think of Bob as a “Boulder” Republican, which is a far cry from a conservative Republican.

Erika comments in the “comments section” that the descriptions came from the columnists.

Red light camera commentor nails it

Daily Camera editors, read this comment regarding the Rocky Mountain News coverage of the Denver red light cameras. Why aren’t you doing reporting like this?

Brix57 writes:

This is perhaps the perfect article of how a local newspaper is supposed to operate. Here we have a local reporter actually reporting on a local policy, reporting on the indifference of the local police and reporting on the performance of a company contracted. We really don’t care about all the news that happens outside our local area, written by people that have maybe never set foot in Colorado. We want the local news that directly affects us here.

I can only imagine that this is only the tallest tip of an iceberg that the local newspapers could cover. It only takes a local newspaper to report on the vast inefficiencies of our government that wastes incredible amounts of our tax money. There are so many laws and policies on the books that never get enforced and so many that slip through the cracks. Our local newspapers never cover these, and they wonder why they are losing readers.

It’s all about the money

After reading today’s Rocky Mountain News editorial on red light cameras, it’s hard to believe otherwise regarding the City of Denver. Is Boulder any different? I seriously doubt it. A couple of interesting facts are presented in the editorial, such as….

1. There is a legal minimum for yellow light duration of three (3) seconds.

2. Increasing yellow light times to “four or five seconds” from three seconds, reduces the number of violators from an average of 125 in a 12 hours period to 11.7 daily! Ouch says the cities coffers!

Some time ago I measured and compared the the yellow light duration at the Arapahoe and 28th street intersection (red light camera) to the Arapahoe and 30th street intersection. At the time I was looking for a mismatch between the two yellow light times and although my memory is hazy, the difference was insignificant. What I don’t remember exactly is the yellow light duration. Let’s just say I will be measuring it again.

Yellow light timing

Apparently the length of the yellow light timing has a large effect on the number of violators caught by the red light camera’s. Like duh!

The soon to be defunct Rocky Mountain News has taken the City of Denver to task as seen in this video from last March…

Wouldn’t it be nice of the news and editorial staff at the Boulder Daily Camera could do similar investigative reporting? Of course, since the paper is in the Cities hip pocket and they are on the same page regarding most key issues, including the “cars are evil” issue, I’m sure it’s never crossed their collective minds.

Makes you wonder if the red light cameras are “all about the money” doesn’t it?

Fire…

Well today didn’t go exactly as planned. We find ourselves staying in Longmont this evening due to the fires in north Boulder county. From all accounts we can find, it appears the area we live in is relatively safe.

Thanks to all the first responders and emergency personel that put themselves in harms way. With very high winds, it was a dangerous environment indeed.
