ACORN/Census

And we want ACORN involved in the census?

The testimony by Pittsburgh lawyer Heather Heidelbaugh accused the nonprofit group of violating tax, campaign-finance and other laws by, among other things, sharing with the Barack Obama campaign a list of the Democrat’s maxed-out campaign donors so ACORN could use it to solicit them for a get-out-the-vote drive.

You can’t make this stuff up. Remember, you reap what you sow. I hope the people “sowing” have got it right. Me, I’m going to read Atlas Shrugged (hey, it’s out of stock, I wonder why?). I’ve already got the going John Galt thing down.

Too right wing

From Erika Stutzman’s twitter page

Just got a note from a former subscriber complaining that we’re too right wing. You heard it here first, folks: The paper is “right wing.”

Which just goes to show how far left Boulder is. I actually know a few people who might have made that complaint/comment! And to think they lost our subscription for being too left wing. Guess the Daily Camera can’t win.

Better hope they don’t

No seat belt law

Boulderites, can you believe that there’s actually a state that doesn’t have a seat belt law. How is that possible? How could a state let their citizens think for themselves. Any guesses which state it is?

Well I won’t keep you in suspense, it’s the “Live free of die” state, New Hampshire. You can gather background information from this Wall Street Journal article.

The Granite State has long been known for its plucky Yankee self-sufficiency — it was the first colony to declare independence from Great Britain in 1776. Today it is the only state in the nation that doesn’t have a law requiring adults to wear seat belts. It has resisted efforts to pass one for 30 years, and has been the proud lone outlier since 1995, when neighboring Maine became the 49th state to buckle.

Interestingly enough, the state is now Democratically controlled and guess what, they are trying to implement a seat belt law! One of the reasons is the state would receive $3.7 million in federal money. Some call it “blackmail” money since the percentage of people who actually wear seat belts is about the same as surrounding states…

Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show seat-belt usage in New Hampshire is already about 69%, on par with some other states. But many here oppose the law on principle and cherish the liberty to drive unbuckled as a hallmark of individualism. “We’re becoming a nanny state; we’re losing our identity,” says state Rep. Sherman Packard, a Republican from Londonderry. He calls the federal funds dangling over the state “blackmail money, plain and simple.”

At this point in time, it’s a “feel good” law, the type Boulderites would pass without giving it a 2nd thought. I say, “Live free or die”, unfortunately it appears New Hampshire will soon become the 50th state with a seat belt law.

“Democracy isn’t working”

NASA’s global warming alarmist, James Hansen expresses his disappointment that democracy is being distorted when it comes to global warming.

James Hansen, a climate modeller with Nasa, told the Guardian today that corporate lobbying has undermined democratic attempts to curb carbon pollution. “The democratic process doesn’t quite seem to be working,” he said..

Perhaps that’s because the “my way or the highway” approach to global warming that Mr. Hansen and Al Gore have taken with the general public is no longer working. not to mention not being able to predict anything.

More interesting than the article of Mr. Hansen whining like Denver Bronco’s QB Jay Cutler are some of the comments such as…

This is the same man who flew from the USA to Copenhagen for a Global Warming Conference? How many tons of CO2 did that spew into the Atmosphere? Not that it matters, one of his Colleagues at NASA, Hathaway, predicted in 2005 that the next sunspot cycle would be the biggest we’d ever seen, starting mid 2006. Actually we’re still waiting for the next sunspot cycle to properly start. The amount of radiation, Total Solar Irradiance or TSI has dropped, Cosmic Ray counts are up, indicative of a weaker solar wind. Parts of the US and Canada have had their coldest winters in 150 years.

Most Importantly, taking the planet as a whole, temperature hasn’t increased since 1999 and yet we are still bombarded by Global warming Warnings. Local or Regional Climate may change, but in the first ten years of the 21st century no rise in temperature has been observed across the planet.

Look at FACTS, not at propaganda, what Hansen spouts is propaganda and the science is tainted

Thin skinned

Coach K and Obama apparently deserve each other. They both seem to suffer from being “thin skinned”. Perhaps we should toss in Jay Cutler while we’re at it?

Printing money out of thin air…

The International Herald Tribune chimes in on the Feds $1.2 trillion program.

WASHINGTON: The Federal Reserve sharply stepped up its efforts to bolster the economy on Wednesday, announcing that it would pump an extra $1 trillion into the financial system by purchasing Treasury bonds and mortgage securities.

Having already reduced the key interest rate it controls nearly to zero, the central bank has increasingly turned to alternatives like buying securities as a way of getting more dollars into the economy, a tactic that amounts to creating vast new sums of money out of thin air. But the moves on Wednesday were its biggest yet, almost doubling all of the Fed’s measures in the last year.

The article goes on to say that the last time the Federal Reserve bought long term bonds was 50 years ago.

Federal Reserve to buy $1.2 trillion in government bonds

A short term fix, but here’s the problem described towards the end of the article…

Where does the Fed get all the money? It prints it.

The bond market and gold markets both rallied. Long term debt rallied as the number of buyers increased for the same amount of supply so the treasury can offer lower interest rates. Gold rallied due to inflation fears for the reason given above.

Gold rallies $50/oz on Federal Reserve announcement.

An amazing fall in yield of the 10 year Treasury note of almost 1/2%. Note that a falling yield is equivalent to a rising bond price.

added at 21:34pm on 3/19…

More on this potential fiasco over at Christopher Fountain’s blog.

Yesterday I heard an economist on NPR predict that the Fed would not buy long term bonds because it was “a last ditch stand” ; its potential to explode inflation was so huge. “Like firing an unguided missile”, he said.

Flunking science

This is absolutely pathetic

* Only 53% of adults know how long it takes for the Earth to revolve around the Sun.
* Only 59% of adults know that the earliest humans and dinosaurs did not live at the same time.
* Only 47% of adults can roughly approximate the percent of the Earth’s surface that is covered with water.*
* Only 21% of adults answered all three questions correctly.

Perhaps the adults teachers embraced the teaching philosophy set forth by Joanne Yatvin…

Finally, I’d tell him to lose the words “achievement” and “rigor,” which have no connection to the inquisitiveness, determination, creative thinking and perseverance students need for genuine lifelong learning.

Census asks ACORN to help draft workers

No wonder Judd Gregg withdrew

Judd Gregg mentioned irresolvable conflicts when he withdrew his nomination to serve as President Obama’s Commerce Secretary. Now we know why

The U.S. Census is supposed to be free of politics, but one group with a history of voter fraud, ACORN, is participating in next year’s count, raising concerns about the politicization of the decennial survey.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now signed on as a national partner with the U.S. Census Bureau in February 2009 to assist with the recruitment of the 1.4 million temporary workers needed to go door-to-door to count every person in the United States — currently believed to be more than 306 million people.

This truly boggles the mind.

Congress united!

Well it took outrage over the AIG bonuses to do it, but Congress appears united in their efforts to get the money returned, either voluntarily or via taxation.

Sure hope they turn their eyes inward on their favorite “pork” projects next.
