Antarctic ice expanding!

Ice core drilling in the fast ice off Australia’s Davis Station in East Antarctica by the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Co-Operative Research Centre shows that last year, the ice had a maximum thickness of 1.89m, its densest in 10 years. The average thickness of the ice at Davis since the 1950s is 1.67m.

A paper to be published soon by the British Antarctic Survey in the journal Geophysical Research Letters is expected to confirm that over the past 30 years, the area of sea ice around the continent has expanded.

In the interest of being “fair and balanced”, NOAA recently announced that the first 3 months of 2009 were the 8th warmest on record. Still, even NOAA agrees that the Antarctic ice is expanding.

Folks hot and bothered, the media cool and indifferent

Neil sums up the tea party reporting and liberal political reaction succintly. His message to the MSM…

Such is the history of fringe causes. The media eventually, eventually covers them. If only to cover something else: their ass.

Tea party attendence.

Tea Party history

Michelle Malking documents the tea party history.

Just makes Nancy’s “astroturf” comment look even more stoopid.

“Astroturf”

Nancy doesn’t get it. No surprise I might add.

No she will never get it. Hopefully the same goes for many politicians on both sides of the aisle. As noted below, that includes Republicans.

Will the administration and the MSM get it? Note likely. Perhaps Neil Cavuto was right when he stated

Why cover some nuts throwing tea into Boston Harbor when you harbor doubts about the nuts throwing the tea. Until you discover they’re not nuts.

It’s not about tea. And you’re the one on the wrong side. Not of the protest, but of something else: history.

Perhaps if the MSM doesn’t report it, it won’t happen?

“Teabagging”

Disgraceful. To the anchors and other participants at MSNBC, CNN and other like minded media outlets, what has journalism become?

Oh, and btw, Fox News kicked your ass.

Tea Party: “Dispicable and Shameful”

That’s according to Representative Jean Schakowsky. Instapundit does the takedown….

If only it weren’t so easy.

Jean Schakowsky doesn’t understand the problem. Odds are she never will. Reactions like this only strengthen my resolve that the Tea Parties are good for the country. If it makes politicians angry (and scared) it’s a damn good thing.

I still need to do some reading on some of the reporting, but it certainly appears that the hidden agenda’s of some reporters are seeing the light of day.

Tea Party T-shirts and Posters

Great variety of T-shirts and posters from the Atlanta Tea Party.

I particularly like this one.

You were worried about wiretapping?

Under the Bush administration liberals were screaming about the illegal wiretaps. It’s worse now. I can’t hear you! This is a New York Times report of all sources!

I still can’t hear you!

Nashville Tea Party

More indications that Tea Parties are not a GOP “thing”.

But disorganization has its benefits. This was not a partisan political event. The national GOP, and even most Republican members of Congress kept their distance. One elected representative who was there, State Rep. Joe Carr of Murfreesboro, was careful to draw a distinction that this Tea Party protest was a “conservative” movement, and not a Republican one. And by conservative, he meant not all Republicans, along with quite a few fiscally-responsible Democrats, Libertarians, and Independents. There were perhaps another dozen representatives who popped up from time to time to see what was happening–one legislative aide told me that the size of the rally astonished many of his fellow staffers on Capitol Hill. But for the most part, Tennessee’s representatives stayed on the sidelines like their national counterparts. Even when one of the speakers was nearby Congressman Marsha Blackburn, the event still kept its distance from the GOP, just as the GOP did from it. A sign near the center of the crowd summed up the sentiment succinctly: Above side-by-side pictures of President Bush and President Obama were the words “Dumb & Dumber”.

One source of the disorganization was that the event’s genesis was virtually all virtual. It was organized in the ether of the blogosphere and on social networks like Facebook. There were no paid community organizers there to organize things. Instead, it was several Tennessee bloggers who witnessed what they had a large hand in creating. Ben Cunningham, Kay Brooks, Jane Whitson, Blake Wylie (along with his lovely new bride) were all there recording the event, volunteers all.

Of course many, especially around “you know where”, will find the word “conservative” as or more distasteful than “GOP”. Keep in mind that there isn’t a “Conservative” party.

Also, take note of this…

There were no paid community organizers there to organize things.

I find that very refreshing, unlike ACORN and their ilk.

White house and the Tea Parties

So did the Tea Parties infuriate the White House or were they ignorant of them?

Is CNBC too conservative? Good grief. 😉

Tea party Republican smackdown

Michelle documents California GOP chair Ron Nehring being “smacked down” at the Sacramento Tea Party. This movement is not as simple minded as many believe. Doesn’t mean it won’t die, but it has the potential to be more broad based than many will allow themselves to believe.

Meckler said he heard that California GOP chair Ron Nehring was in the audience. Meckler invited him to say hi to the crowd — and then ripped him for waffling on the massive tax hike ballot measures (particularly Prop1A – $16 billion tax hikes).

Tea party politics

Judging from comments I’ve read in the local Boulder paper, the tea party movement is incorrectly being pigeonholed into the right wing conservative wacko box. I don’t think that reflects reality. To me, this Jennifer Rubin article at Pajama’s media correctly reflects the texture of the Tea Party movement. Regarding the politics of the movement…

But Republicans should not be rejoicing quite yet. Many protesters went out of their way to say they are upset with both parties and hold George W. Bush equally responsible for launching the now never-ending stream of bailouts. And the crowd, if anything, was libertarian in bent rather than conservative. These people are advocating less government, restraints on federal power, and a return to “constitutional government.” Social conservatives who seek expansion of state power on issues from abortion to support for faith-based programs may find themselves at odds with a newly invigorated movement to shrink government and enhance individual liberty.

It is not clear whether this is the making of a new political party or a flash in the pan. What it does show is that the absence of a single Republican leader does not hinder some impressive grassroots organizing. It also shows that young conservatives, who were out in abundance in Lafayette Park even in the pouring rain, do know how to organize through new media including Twitter. And it shows that for conservatives and libertarians, the Obama presidency is a powerful organizing tool. Just as the Left coalesced in opposition to George W. Bush, these activists are, to a large extent, acting out of resentment and anger toward the president and Democratic congressional leaders.

I’ll update when I get more info. I’ve been quite busy today tending to other things.

The Deficit

The two graphs below depicting decline in tax receipts and the increase in government spending as a percentage of income (tax receipts) are produced from this U.S. Treasury data.

The graph below depicts government spending as a % of income (tax receipts). Note, in this case a postive percentage means the U.S. is in deficit spending mode.

This graph depicts the drop in income (tax receipts) from 2008 to 2009. A positive number is a measurement of decrease in income to the U.S. Treasury.

Not a pretty picture, especially the 30% year over year drop in tax receipts from March 2008 to 2009.

H/T to Tom Blummer over at Pajama’s Media.
