Cronyism

NJ Senator Frank Lautenberg: Nominates Chuck Schumer’s brotherinlaw for judgeship.

What no one mentioned is that McNulty, 57, was the last-minute choice of Lautenberg, who had been leaning toward other candidates until surprisingly submitting McNulty’s name to the White House.

Lautenberg and his aides have given no public explanation for the decision to go with McNulty even though the latter had never been publicly touted as a contender for the job, which carries life tenure and a $174,000-a-year salary.

“No one knows why he did it,” said one person involved in the nomination process. “Everyone thinks it’s all about 2014 and Frank making sure he has Chuck in his corner.”

Of course, nothing remotely similar ever could happen in Boulder: Commissioner Ben Pearlman chosen for Boulder County attorney’s post

Interesting how the politically savvy County Commissioners announce their decision on one of the slowest news days of the year.

The wonderful Canadian Health Care System

One of the treatments my daughter has had for her ulcerative colitis (UC) is REMICADE. She had it prior to her colectomy last May. While it worked temporarily it wasn’t the solution for her and she ended up having a total colectomy. Six weeks after the total colectomy she had her “take down” surgery where they create a “pouch” from the end of the small intestine to serve as a reservoir.

For practical purposes, after the “take down” surgery, to the outside world she appears 100% normal. Unfortunately, they leave a small amount of colon in place to connect the j-pouch to. In her case, her body was still upset with this small amount of colon and her colitis is still active.

As you can imagine, no one is interested in surgery OR “undoing” the takedown. So she has been put back on REMICADE and it appears to be working quite well. (Note once again, as before, numerous other more traditional and less expensive treatments were tried first)

Doing some internet searching, it turns out that REMICADE would not have been available to her in Canada for her treatments early this year. As a parent, I would find that beyond frustrating. Although it didn’t work for us, to not have that as an option, well you can have your Canadian health care system, just keep it in Canada.

Good news for Canadian parents with children suffering from UC, as of September 2011 REMICADE has been approved in Canada for pediatric patients.

Young Canadians living with the debilitating inflammatory bowel disease ulcerative colitis (UC) will now have access to a new treatment option with Health Canada’s approval of REMICADE® (infliximab) for use in pediatric patients (age six to 17 years). REMICADE® has been approved for the treatment of UC in adults in Canada since 2006.

“I would advise Vladimir Putin to leave now. He has had his three terms: two as president and one as prime minister. Three terms — that is enough,”

So says Mikhail Gorbachev.

Rally participants densely packed a broad avenue, which has room for nearly 100,000 people, about 2.5 kilometers (some 1.5 miles) from the Kremlin, as the temperature dipped well below freezing. They chanted “Russia without Putin!”

A stage at the end of the 700-meter (0.43 mile) avenue featured placards reading “Russia will be free” and “This election Is a farce.” Heavy police cordons encircled the participants, who stood within metal barriers, and a police helicopter hovered overhead.

I’d say interesting times in Russia for Putin and friends.

The Cost of Safety

It’s not measured in dollars, it’s measured in freedom.

Congress is set to give the green light on funding for a massive expansion of TSA checkpoints, with the federal agency already responsible for over 9,000 such checkpoints in the last year amidst increased fears America is turning into a police state following the passage of the ‘indefinite detention’ bill.

Bring on the police state, all in the name of safety.

In reality, the program was the latest phase of the TSA’s rapidly expanding VIPR program, under which TSA agents have been deployed to shake down Americans at everywhere from bus depots, to ferry terminals, to train stations, in one instance conducting pat downs of passengers, including children, who had already completed their journey when arriving in Savannah.

But THEY CANNOT PROTECT OUR BORDERS. Unbelievable. It’s like we’re scared of our how shadow. Maybe because we are.

Here’s what happens when you allow adverse selection

From a health insurance website:

Next to my gym there is a taco wagon. It has been there for years. I know the owner.
He knows I sell health ins.
Late last summer he tells me he needs a knee replacement.
He asks me what he should do?
I tell him about PCIP.
His daughter gets him enrolled for 9.01.11.
He has the surgery done in Sept and only pays the Sept premium. Cx’d 9.30.11.
I now get free burritos

PCIP: Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan

Sweet, unfortunately my daughters ulcerative colitis, or what remains of it, doesn’t allow me to drop health insurance. At least I paid my effing monthly premiums to get the insurance company “on the hook”.

Perfect logic courtesy of the government. Mr Taco Stand Owner gets coverage for ONE month to pay for a knee replacement. I’d at least keep it for the 2nd month to make sure it got paid.

If your healthy or not particularly sick and haven’t had coverage for 6 months, why should you get insurance? If your timing is great you can get coverage in 15 days, if it sucks you can get coverage in 45. Roll the dice.

Faith in Government

But here’s the curious thing: While whipping up fear about mercury in the outdoors, the EPA is actively downplaying mercury’s health risks when it comes out of fluorescent bulbs inside people’s homes.

The explanation of this apparent hypocrisy?

What both have in common, however, is that they advance the EPA’s control of our lives.

On the one hand, it wants to decide how we light our homes to force energy savings. On the other, it wants to shove the country off coal to reduce global warming.

So what if it has to speak out of both sides of its mouth on mercury risks?

In the end, the real risk to the nation’s health isn’t from minute traces of mercury coming out of smokestacks or broken CFLs. It’s from the economy-crushing mandates pouring forth from the EPA.

No need to worry about the economy according to EPA administrator Lisa Jackson:

Fear not, since Jackson claims the “health and economic benefits” will be many times greater than the costs.

Price Discovery #1: Torn biceps tendon

A few years ago my wife felt a pain in her shoulder/bicep while moving the Christmas Tree. At the time, we didn’t think much of it. However, the pain didn’t improve and months later she saw a specialist. The suspicion was a torn biceps tendon but to determine for sure would require an MRI (with dye I believe).

The group plan we were on at that time (actually COBRA) was a high deductible plan but the company funded an FSA, Flexible Spending Account, for the first $2000. Due to our daughter slipping on the ice and severely spraining her ankle, these fund had been depleted. So we found ourselves in a donut hole. We had about $900 until the insurance kicked in at 100%. We determined that an MRI at Boulder Community was approximately $1400. A different facility in Denver could do the requested procedure for about $900.

So my wife and I contemplated our two options. Either way, we were out $900, but one way would require at least a couple hour total drive time and the other solution was just a typical trip into Boulder. Obviously we selected Boulder Community. However, if it was all coming out of our pocket, yessirree, we would have driven down to Denver.

In this instance, we were able to do price discovery and made a conscious decision. From out pocketbook the decision made perfect sense. From a big picture point of view, did it make sense? In this case, it was easier to spend someone else’s money for our convenience. Somehow, I suspect if more people were willing to select a different facility, the difference in pricing for the MRI between the two facilities wouldn’t have been $500.

The diagnosis, sure enough a torn biceps tendon due to a bone spur on her rotator cuff. A relatively short surgery at the cost of about $12,000 repaired the issue. No, we didn’t price shop the surgery, we liked our specialist who had advised her since we had started the search for the problem. It’s different price shopping for a relatively well documented procedure such as an MRI, vs. surgery.

Medical Costs: Lessons in price discovery

If you want to control medical costs, you have two choices, price discovery or government regulation.

I have some personal experience in price discovery and I’ll be posting about in the next day or two. Frankly, you might be able to “discover”, but doing anything about it, that may be another matter.

Of course, then it comes down to either more regulation or fewer regulations. You know which side I’m on.
