Sage on the Stage

Joanne Jacobs: What works? The sage on the stage

Discovery learning, problem-based learning, inquiry learning, constructivist learning — whatever the label, teaching that only partially guides students, and expects them to discover information on their own, is not effective or efficient. Decades of research clearly demonstrates that when teaching new information or skills, step-by-step instruction with full explanations works best.

And the reason we have these new inefficient teaching methods? From our masthead…

So why do intelligent people consistently make such a hash of things? Because they are smart enough to talk themselves into anything. Ordinary mortals don’t engage in fancy mental gymnastics to reach conclusions that defy common sense. But intellectuals are particularly prone to this.

To which I say “Thanks”

Carbonite stock price

The stock of Carbonite, the on line data back up company, has done quite poorly since dropping their sponsorship of the Rush Limbaugh show.

If you step back and think about it, it’s no great surprise. I believe it’s safe to assume the most vocal critics of Rush’s antics are far left liberals and progressives. The type of people who believe it’s the governments job to take care of them and protect their data. NOT likely future Carbonite customers.

On the other hand, in general Rush’s audience believe in taking responsibility for their data and are much more likely potential customers. By dropping sponsorship of Rush’s show, Carbonite made a bunch of loud mouthed protesters that most likely will never be customers happy and lost both current and future customers.

Rocket Science.

VC Brad Feld: Starwood – you keep bumming me out with your WiFi policy. I’m already paying a ridiculous premium for your high end hotel – why not toss in the WiFi like the Marriott does. Or, at least get it to work.

Verizon 4G MiFI Obliterates Hotel WiFi

I had my IT guy Ross overnight me a Verizon 4G MiFi. It arrived the morning of day three and I never looked back. I plugged the MiFi into the wall, pressed the On button, connected each device, and never thought about Internet access again for the remaining twelve days. When I went down to the pool, where nothing worked at all, including the hotel WiFi, I sat for hours with my MiFi happily connected. Performance was great – I didn’t even notice that I wasn’t on a 50MB/sec connection.

Louis C.K. to speak at Radio and Television Correspondents Association Dinner

Greta Van Sustern says she’s not going.

Here’s an example of Louis C.K.’s comedy routine when it comes to Sarah Palin…

“her f*** retard making c***” and “the baby that just came out of her f**** disgusting c***.”

To Palin: just “stick your t** in its mouth and shut up.”

And here is more: ”…her f***** retard making c****”

Need more to convince you? Here is what he says on twitter:

“I want to rub my father’s c*** all over Sarah Palin’s fat t***”

Of course, it IS Sarah Palin so perhap’s it’s ok? Fill me in Boulder progressives.

I’m sure this was already planned but one must wonder if the Association is tone deaf to the goings on around it, or perhaps they are just plain stoopid or is it simply arrogance?

Glenn Reynolds: Obama may get tired of this issue before it goes away.

Ya think?

Oh and Keith Olberman apologizes to Michelle Malkin and S.E. Cupp. Tina Korbe comments here and has this conclusion:

Furthermore, the president said his interest in reassuring and encouraging Fluke was to encourage young women to speak out. As a woman much younger than Fluke, I can’t say I find it the least bit reassuring or encouraging to speak out when I observe the insults routinely hurled at women who share my ideology and/or receive such insults myself. Either the president wants everyone to feel free to speak their minds — in which case he would call Cupp, Malkin or at least one such conservative woman whom liberals have attempted to silence to make that point — or he just wants liberal women to feel free to speak their minds. I think we all know which it is.
(emphasis added – Ed)

I think we do to.

Michigan Lottery winner kicked off food stamp program.

Bummer for Amanda Clayton but a very small victory for tax payers. Of course she ONLY won the Michigan lottery and it’s $1 million prize (prior to taxes and slightly more that $500,000 after lump sum and taxes).

The big issue is her sense of entitlement.

Keystone Pipeline

Today the Senate turned back the Republican’s effort to green light the construction of the Keystone pipeline without President Obama’s approval.

John Hinderaker: At this point, I think it is safe to say that Barack Obama and the Democrats own the price of gasoline.

Glenn Reynolds: OIL? WHY WOULD WE WANT MORE OIL FROM A FRIENDLY COUNTRY?

Kudo’s to the 11 Democrats that crossed the aisle to vote with the Republican’s:

  • Max Baucus (Mont.),
  • Mark Begich (Alaska)
  • Bob Casey (Pa.)
  • Kent Conrad (N.D.)
  • Kay Hagan (N.C.)
  • Mary Landrieu (La.)
  • Joe Manchin (W.Va.)
  • Claire McCaskill (Mo.)
  • Mark Pryor (Ark.)
  • Jon Tester (Mont.) and
  • Jim Webb (Va.)

Absolutely no surprise that Colorado Senators Mark Udall and Michael Bennet are not in the above list.

Bob Myers: Boulder City Council wasting money on eminent domain case

    No fooling.

Really? Really! Schoolground bullies they are. What did Jim Croce say…

You don’t tug on Superman’s cape
You don’t spit int othe wind
You don’t pull the mask off that old Lone Ranger
And you don’t mess around with Jim

Apparently Barry Barnow did all these things at once to Boulder City Council so in retribution the City of Boulder is being the bully and attempting to use the power of eminent domain to force Barry to sell his land.

The land sits just outside the airport and contains a longtime “through the fence” agreement — a relatively common type of legal access agreement — that allows the property owner to taxi an aircraft directly to the airport runway.

    Here is my prediction:

    1. The City will lose legally and financially
    2. Barry Barnow will win the legal battle but lose the financial battle
    3. The law firm of Duncan, Ostrander & Dingess will be the big winner

You can’t make this stuff up.

Wonder why we never heard about this…

Michelle Malkin: The war on conservative women

I’m sorry Rush Limbaugh called 30-year-old Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a “slut.” She’s really just another professional femme-a-gogue helping to manufacture a false narrative about the GOP “war on women.” I’m sorry the civility police now have an opening to demonize the entire right based on one radio comment — because it’s the progressive left in this country that has viciously and systematically slimed female conservatives for their beliefs.

Here’s just a few of the examples Michelle provides…

Or when MSNBC misogynist Ed Schultz called talk show host Laura Ingraham a “talk slut” for criticizing Obama’s petty beer summit. Or when Playboy published a list of the top 10 conservative women who deserved to be “hate-f**ked.” The article, which was promoted by Anne Schroeder Mullins at Politico.com, included Ingraham, “The View’s” Elisabeth Hasselbeck, former Bush spokeswoman Dana Perino, GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann and others. Yours truly topped the list with the following description: a “highly f**kable Filipina” and “a regular on Fox News, where her tight body and get-off-my-lawn stare just scream, ‘Do me!’”

And then there’s the left’s war on Sarah Palin, which would require an entire national forest of trees to publish.

President Obama kicked the can down the road when he had a chance to condemn (liberal)hate speech

A reporter asked Obama to comment on examples of liberal hate speech at Tuesday’s press conference. He whiffed, of course. This is, after all, the brave leader who sat on his hands while his street thugs attacked tea party mothers and grandmothers as “Koch whores” during the fight over union reform in Wisconsin. (As I reported last week, his re-election campaign is now targeting the Koch brothers’ private foundation donors in a parallel effort to chill conservative speech and activism.) He’s leading by example.

So no, we won’t get any phone calls from Mr. Civility. Acknowledging the war on conservative women would obliterate The Narrative. Enjoy the silence.

Perhaps in the eyes of liberals, conservative women, well, aren’t women.
