Crichton Poppycock?

At the offices of the local Boulder Newspaper this apparently qualifies as a book review. The book is Michael Crichton’s latest science fiction book, “State of Fear”. Through the book Crichton takes aim at the global warming crowd using data from scientific studies and includes footnotes. The fact that someone could use scientific studies to question the global warming crowd throws the reviewer into a rant. Some favorite one liners are:

“Now, assuming you are not on the board of a major oil company and you are not

Ann Coulter, would you rush out to the nearest bookstore for your copy?”

… and after expressing dismay at Crichton’s thesis and documented evidence that is just so crazy we run into Ann Coulter again…

“Keeping in mind that you are still not Ann Coulter, does this sound like a “must-read”?”

I haven’t read the book and it isn’t even close to the top of my “must read” list. However, to think that a rant like this can make it into the major local newspaper was stunning to me! Color me naive I suppose.

Obviously there’s room for discussion on Crichton’s footnotes, paid research, etc, and a book reviewer is supposed to have an opinion, just not be a raving lunatic.
