Boulder Barnes and Noble: An interesting conversation

added 5/27: Welcome to the Barnes & Noble employee(s) from NY that visit this post!

While taking my weekly stroll through Barnes and Noble today, I noticed that Ayn Rand’s novel “Atlas Shrugged” was on the high school required reading table. I struck up a conversation with an employee that basically went like this:

Me: “Do schools actually require reading of Atlas Shrugged for classroom work”

Employee: “Yes, some do”

Me: “Wow, there may be hope after all!”

Her: “Interesting, I think of it more as despair”

Me (as she walks away): “Well I’m a fish out of water around here.”

I would like to know what Boulder high schools are reading Atlas Shrugged!

The response from the employee reminds me of this quote:

“To a man, the greatest blessing is individual liberty. To a dog, it is the last word in despair.” – William Lyon Phelps (1865-1943)

P.S.) Steamboat Springs is also a stoopid place!
