After reading today’s Rocky Mountain News editorial on red light cameras, it’s hard to believe otherwise regarding the City of Denver. Is Boulder any different? I seriously doubt it. A couple of interesting facts are presented in the editorial, such as….
1. There is a legal minimum for yellow light duration of three (3) seconds.
2. Increasing yellow light times to “four or five seconds” from three seconds, reduces the number of violators from an average of 125 in a 12 hours period to 11.7 daily! Ouch says the cities coffers!
Some time ago I measured and compared the the yellow light duration at the Arapahoe and 28th street intersection (red light camera) to the Arapahoe and 30th street intersection. At the time I was looking for a mismatch between the two yellow light times and although my memory is hazy, the difference was insignificant. What I don’t remember exactly is the yellow light duration. Let’s just say I will be measuring it again.
