Value of the dollar

In an earlier post I mentioned the deteriorating value of the dollar during Greenspan’s tenure. Here is an example using a calculator from the Measuringworth.com website. Using the period from 1986 (Greenspan took office in August of 86) until 2005 (the latest date the calculator works with), the results for how many of today’s dollars it takes to equal $10,000 1986 dollars are shown below.

In 2005, $10,000.00 from 1986 is worth:

$17,819.34 using the Consumer Price Index
$15,823.16 using the GDP deflator
$19,445.65 using the value of consumer bundle
$18,179.24 using the unskilled wage
$22,642.18 using the nominal GDP per capita
$27,910.28 using the relative share of GDP
